Feminism and the Crisis of Academic Freedom

Flyer for the conference “Feminism and the Crisis of Academic Freedom,” presented by the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Western University. The conference takes place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, at the Chu Centre, International and Graduate Affairs Building (IGAB). The keynote speaker is Dr. Shannon Dea (St. Mary’s University). The conference examines the intensifying pressures faced by feminist, queer, and decolonial scholarship and organizing in the context of global authoritarianism, including censorship, campus crackdowns, surveillance, backlash, and political risk. It asks what it means to do feminist work under these conditions and how scholars can remain accountable to movements that are frequently co‑opted, criminalized, or flattened into depoliticized narratives.
