Divided Waters: The Early Years of Oil and Gas Extraction in the Great Lakes
When southwestern Ontario's natural gas and oil reserves dwindled in the early twentieth century, the industry took to the beds of the Great Lakes. From the start, the offshore expansion triggered court cases, economic enthusiasm and ecological fear. This presentation looks at what empowered Ontario's fossil fuel industry to operate in one of the world's most vital freshwater systems, the impact of local resistance on its activity, and, ultimately, how this niche practice transformed perceptions of the Great Lakes in ways that are still in effect today.
