Work Safe Program

Hours and Service Responsibility

The Work Safe Program is available seven days a week during evening and overnight hours.

• September 1 to April 30: Foot Patrol operates the program from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., and WSCS operates it from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.
• May 1 to August 31: WSCS operates the program from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• September, holidays, and examination periods: Service begins at 9 p.m. instead of 6 p.m.

How Work Safe Works

When you contact Work Safe, a check-in schedule will be established based on your location, expected work or study period, and the time you expect to finish.

1. Call before beginning your evening or overnight work or study period
2. Provide your name, location, contact information, and expected finish time
3. Agree on scheduled check-in times
4. Respond promptly when contacted or complete the agreed check-in
5. Contact Work Safe when you are leaving or no longer require the service

If you miss a scheduled check-in and cannot be reached, follow-up steps may be taken to confirm your safety.

If You Miss a Check-In

If you do not complete a scheduled check-in, Work Safe will take steps to confirm your safety.

1. A five-minute grace period is provided after the scheduled check-in time
2. If you have not checked in, Work Safe will attempt to contact you
3. A second five-minute period is provided for you to respond
4. If contact still cannot be made, WSCS may be dispatched to your location to confirm your safety

Contact Work Safe promptly if your plans, location, contact information, or expected finish time change.

Who Can Use Work Safe

Work Safe is available to members of the Western community who are working or studying alone on Western property during the program’s operating hours.

• Western students
• Faculty and staff
• Authorized contractors or other individuals working on Western property
• People working or studying in locations covered by the Work Safe Program

Contact Foot Patrol or WSCS if you are unsure whether the program is available for your location or circumstances.

Work Safe Is Not a Transportation Service

Work Safe provides scheduled safety check-ins. It does not provide rides, transportation, or an escort between locations.

• Use Foot Patrol for a walking escort when that service is available
• Contact WSCS if you feel unsafe or need non-emergency safety assistance
• Call 911 if there is an immediate threat, crime in progress, fire, or urgent medical emergency
