The winter term embarks on an exciting time of year where students are able to explore their interests and meet plenty of new people. I remember when I was beginning my second year of undergrad and had visited Western’s Annual Clubs Fair for the first time I was amazed by the variety of clubs that our school has to offer. Looking around at all of the booths and the different communities each club has built made me realize that there is truly a community here for everybody. This is just one of the many ways to become involved as a student at Western. The University Students’ Council encompasses over 170 student-led clubs allowing everyone to find a community of people that embody the same interests as themselves. From wanting to connect with your cultural group, to learning about robotics, to even having a passion for sports, there is a space here for every student. In order to become involved in attending club-related events, I recommend that students purchase a club membership off of the Western StoreFront found online. The benefit of having this is, students are able to attend club-related events at a cheaper price as opposed to students who might not have purchased a membership.

Another fun idea for becoming involved in the campus community is by working for the University Students’ Council where students can apply for several part-time paid opportunities like working for Productions Crew, The Spoke Tavern, and The Wave. Western Hospitality Services also offers many part-time paid opportunities at the many other eateries on campus and at Great Hall Catering. Having this kind of unique experience allows students to gain new skills, build connections, and strive in a different environment.

I recently learned about how to get involved in the Western Sports and Recreation facilities. Through Western Sports and Recreation, you are able to partake in a variety of roles including Membership Services, Fitness and Wellness, Intramural Sports, Aquatics, and many more. I would recommend accessing the Western Campus Recreation site to keep up to date with the timings on the position postings.

You can also attend the Leadership Fair, happening on Friday, January 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Weldon Community Room to learn about the many opportunities to get involved in leadership roles on campus!

If you are interested in learning more about my current role as a Digital Peer Leader, I was able to learn about this position by keeping up to date with Western Connect and applying there. Moreover, the USC and Student Experience social media accounts are a great source for updating students on which positions across campus are currently being offered.

Whether you are halfway through your first year at Western, or finishing off your last year, there is a place here for everyone. With the continuous opportunities stretching from all across campus, there are a variety of unique ways to become involved at our school.
