Admission

Eligibility

The MES is an interdisciplinary degree program, accepting students with a variety of degree backgrounds. It is an intense, accelerated program that requires exceptional learning abilities and drive. You should have a strong foundation in a discipline, with a keen interest in and a commitment to learning information and approaches from other disciplines and fields. You will need flexibility and willingness to acquire new skills, including new concepts, ideas and principles that define and inform other disciplines. A basic level of skill in writing, numeracy and scientific reasoning is assumed. You also need to have strong leadership skills, creativity and an ability to work cooperatively in teams. Academic excellence is a priority for the program, along with 'real-world' experience, so each application will be considered with these two priorities in mind.

Entrance Average

Applicants are required to be in their final year or have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree in any discipline (BA, BSc, BESc, BES, BMSc, for example), from an accredited university or college and achieved a minimum 78% average in the last two years of study. Applicants with averages below the required 78% (but with at least a 75% average) will be considered if strong evidence of relevant work experience is presented.

Application Documents and Fee

Below is a list of documents required to complete an application submission to the MES Program. Documents are submitted electronically, using the online application system. An application is not considered complete until all documents have been submitted along with the online application and the application fee. Instructions for fee payment are included in the online application.

Letters of Reference (forms)

Applicants will provide the contact information for their referees on the online application. Referees will receive an Email from Western and access to the Reference Form. The form will be completed online and sent directly back to Western, from the referee. Use of this system is preferable to receiving letters sent by post. The form is easy to use, contains questions specific to the program and delivery is faster and more convenient for both the referee and the applicant. Should a letter by post be submitted, it must arrive sealed in an envelope bearing the school stamp or its original envelope Applicants are expected to monitor the system for submission of their reference forms. Applications will be considered incomplete until all references have been received.

Statement of Academic Intent

The Statement of Academic Intent provides an opportunity for applicants to freely express their interest in the program while providing information useful to determining the suitability of the candidate for entry into the program. The evaluation of your statement will focus on both content and the effective expression of your interest in the program as it relates to your particular goals and aspirations. Attention will be paid to writing skill and style in terms of organization, cohesive and concise articulation of thought, clarity of expression, and proper use of grammar and punctuation.

Employment List

An employment list is a brief and simplified version of your employment and volunteer work history. Do not submit a resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) in place of an Employment List. Resumes and CVs will not be reviewed.
