Letter of Permission
A Letter of Permission is a document that allows you to take one or more courses at another university as a visiting student and transfer the credit(s) towards your degree at Western University. You must apply to the academic advising office within your school for a Letter of Permission, and you must submit your application before you register at the other university. If you take a course without requesting a Letter of Permission, you may have to apply for re-admission to Western.
Eligibility
- The purpose of a Letter of Permission is to support degree completion. When a course is available at Western and is reasonably accessible to you, your request for a Letter of Permission will not be approved.
- You must be in good academic standing. Students on probation are not eligible, nor are students who have been suspended from Western for a Scholastic Offence.
- Special Students and students completing second degrees are not eligible.
Process
- Complete a Request for Letter of Permission form
- Provide course outlines to the appropriate school/department for approval
- Forward signed letter of permission form to your Faculty of Health Sciences advisor for final approval.
- You must adhere to both Western and the other university’s policy/deadlines for admission as a visiting student.
- You are responsible for ordering an official transcript sent to Western upon completion of the course(s).
- Additional resources, including instructions and deadlines, can be found on the Registrar’s Office website.
International University Course Request
Letter of Permission requests from international universities not affiliated with Western’s exchange and study abroad partners will not be approved during the Fall/Winter term, but Summer term requests will be considered. Requests for courses at these institutions will be vetted carefully. Course outlines must include; course title, description, number of course hours, credit weight, methods of evaluation and their weight as well as a detailed course schedule.
Courses Taken at an Online University
Courses taken at an online university must be completed by the end of the corresponding Western term regardless of the length of time permitted by the other institution.
- Courses must be completed by December 31 (if taken in first term), April 30 (if taken in second term) and August 31 for the summer term.
