Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit

The Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit

The Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit is an endowed and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) funded cross sector transdisciplinary research unit.

It is situated within Western’s Cluster of Research Excellence in Musculoskeletal Health and The Bone and Joint Institute. The research conducted in the unit is primarily aligned with The Bone and Joint Institute’s fourth core value of knowledge translation: to efficiently move new knowledge from the laboratory to the marketplace, clinic, and community.

Recently the research unit partnered with the Caregiving Research Laboratory (CaRe Lab), directed by Dr. Marie Savundranayagam, to expand research in the area of community health and dementia. Dr. Savundranayagam was selected as the new director of the Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit in 2019.

Our aim is to identify ways to enable positive and sustained aging at home, and to maximize the positive collective abilities, resilience and resourcefulness of communities as a whole.
