Understanding Quality of Life and Food Security of Pregnant Arab individuals of Middle Eastern Descent

The purpose of this study is to explore how quality of life changes during the three trimesters of pregnancy in Arab individuals of Middle Eastern descent who immigrated to Canada. We also ask questions about food security since it is a major part of quality of life. Findings will provide insight into the overall well-being during pregnancy and help inform future interventions for this population in a culturally sensitive and appropriate way to prevent diabetes during pregnancy. Preventing Diabetes in a High-risk Pregnant Arab Muslim Population through Lifestyle Modification using the Nutrition and Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (NELIP)

The purpose of this study is to investigate a nutrition and exercise program that is based on Arab Muslim culture and religion so that diabetes and excessive weight gain during pregnancy can be prevented. While weight gain is expected during pregnancy, excessive pregnancy weight gain may pose a risk for health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure for the pregnant individual after delivery. We are interested in helping Arab Muslim individuals participate in a healthy, active pregnancy while being sensitive to culture and religious beliefs and taking these beliefs into account in order to prevent health problems that arise from gaining excessive weight during pregnancy or developing gestational diabetes.
