The purpose of this study is to explore how quality of life changes during the three trimesters of pregnancy in Arab individuals of Middle Eastern descent who immigrated to Canada. We also ask questions about food security since it is a major part of quality of life. Findings will provide insight into the overall well-being during pregnancy and help inform future interventions for this population in a culturally sensitive and appropriate way to prevent diabetes during pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to investigate a nutrition and exercise program that is based on Arab Muslim culture and religion so that diabetes and excessive weight gain during pregnancy can be prevented. While weight gain is expected during pregnancy, excessive pregnancy weight gain may pose a risk for health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure for the pregnant individual after delivery. We are interested in helping Arab Muslim individuals participate in a healthy, active pregnancy while being sensitive to culture and religious beliefs and taking these beliefs into account in order to prevent health problems that arise from gaining excessive weight during pregnancy or developing gestational diabetes. Research conducted in the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation Exercise and Pregnancy Lab would not be possible without the assistance of members of the community who serve as research subjects. We are always looking for expectant mothers to participate in our research studies as we strive to create new knowledge that makes for healthier mothers and babies.

The R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation - Exercise and Pregnancy Lab (EPL) was established in 1989 to conduct research investigating the effects of exercise on the pregnant woman and her fetus. We welcome questions from individuals about the risks and benefits of exercise during pregnancy, and are pleased to share the current Canadian Guidelines for Exercise During Pregnancy.
