Blue Emergency Phones
Help Is Close By
Use Western’s blue emergency phones to contact the WSCS Communications Centre directly when you need immediate assistance on campus.
When to Use a Blue Emergency Phone
Use a blue emergency phone when you need urgent assistance on campus and cannot safely use your own phone.
- You feel unsafe or are being followed
- You witness suspicious or dangerous activity
- You need immediate help from WSCS
- You need to report an emergency from your current location
Call 911 whenever there is an immediate threat to life, a crime in progress, fire, or urgent medical emergency.
What Happens When You Activate One
The phone connects directly with the WSCS Communications Centre so you can speak with a communications operator and request assistance.
- Activate the phone and wait for the connection
- State your location and explain what is happening
- Answer questions as clearly as you can
- Follow any instructions provided by the Communications Centre
Stay at the phone if it is safe to do so until help arrives or you are told otherwise. The line will stay connected until the Communications Centre ends the call.
How to Identify a Blue Emergency Phone
Blue emergency phones are designed to be easy to recognize across campus.
- Look for a tall blue emergency-phone unit or clearly marked emergency call station
- All units have a visible light at the top
- Emergency instructions are posted directly on the unit
- Use the activation button or call control shown on the phone
Phone styles may vary by location, but each unit is clearly identified for emergency use.
Where They Are Located
Blue emergency phones are positioned at outdoor locations across Western’s campus, including pathways, parking areas, and other commonly travelled spaces.
- Look for blue emergency-phone units along major pedestrian routes
- Check nearby parking areas and building approaches
- Use the Campus Safety Map to identify emergency-phone locations before travelling
- Contact WSCS if you notice a damaged or non-functioning emergency phone
If the Phone Is Damaged or Not Working
Report damaged, obstructed, or non-functioning emergency phones to WSCS as soon as possible.
- Provide the phone’s location or the nearest building, pathway, or parking area
- Describe the issue, such as physical damage, no response, poor audio, or an obstructed unit
- Use another phone or emergency call station if assistance is needed immediately
- Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to life, a crime in progress, fire, or an urgent medical emergency
