Summary: Little is known about the routes, timing and potential drivers of migration among austral migrants of South America. To contribute to a better understanding we assessed the annual cycle of the White-crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps chilensis), the longest-distance migrant flycatcher within South America, and the Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis australis) from the southernmost tip of South America. Using light-level geolocators, we tracked the annual movements of these passerines that breed on southern Patagonia and migrate north after breeding. This presentation will focus on the migration phenology, routes and non-breeding grounds of these species, as well as an assessment of migratory connectivity of elaenias. Additionally, we will explore variations in migratory timing and distance in Rufous-collared Sparrows, highlighting the potential differential migration observed in females. Two case studies from Patagonian forests will illustrate the complexities of austral passerine migration and the ecological implications of their annual movements.
