Gallery Practices 2012: MainStreaming #pomo |
8-22 March, 2012 This exhibit explores contemporary hipster culture within the context of social media, and discusses the complexities that have emerged as a result of the increasingly mainstream nature of this so-called subculture. This exhibition fuses popular culture and aesthetics with theoretical ideology by engaging and challenging the viewer to participate in the dialogue surrounding this culture of "cool." Historically situated, this anthropological view of North American culture considers the evolution of this iconic movement as it is currently known. Issues of visual representation and the attachment of youth culture to technology as a means of expression and validation are taken up in this show. The exhibition acts as a site for consideration and further discussion. |
