Undergraduate

The Undergraduate Programs in Visual Arts at UWO are an exciting context for learning, creative action, and innovation. The programs combine the study of art history and theory with lively, contemporary art production. Our commitment to integrating art theory with studio work from the very beginning of the program sets us apart from other schools.

Note: All studio courses require materials, the majority of which must be provided by the student. Information on approximate expenses for each course can be obtained by consulting the Department. All studio courses have limited enrolments with priority given to students in Visual Arts degree programs.

Department of Visual Arts Modules:

In general, the first year courses in the undergraduate program (2.0 courses: either VAS 1020 or VAS 1025, and VAH 1040) are foundational and offer a broad scope of ideas, information, and experience. Students are not officially accepted into Visual Arts until second year, though many students indicate their interest in doing a module(s) in Visual Arts when they register in first year*. The second year courses are generally introductions to or surveys of specific areas. In Art History, period or specific thematic courses predominate (for example, Baroque, Canadian, Art and Mass Media), and discipline-specific courses are taught at second year in Studio (Drawing and Painting, Photography, Contemporary Media). In third year, courses are more closely focused to ensure greater depth in studio research and experience or to allow for the study of special topics in art history. At fourth year, courses are more narrowly defined, in general, and allow for study and practice in smaller class contexts.
