Clinical Faculty

Supplemental Supplemental Employment Insurance Benefits (SEIB)

Clinical Faculty may be eligible to claim Supplemental Employment Insurance Benefits (SEIB), as outlined in the Faculty (UWOFA) collective agreement.

This benefit is a “top up” to Employment Insurance (EI) provided by the Government of Canada.  If eligible for Employment Insurance (EI), Clinical Faculty Members are eligible to receive 100% of their Western salary at the time their leave begins for the initial two-week waiting period before EI begins.  When EI begins, SEIB payments will be the difference between EI receivable and 95% of the Western salary for the remaining 22 weeks.

Please note that SEIB payments will be made retroactively to the start of the leave once proof of EI is received by Western Human Resources.  “Proof of EI” is a screen print of the “My Current Claim” screen from the member’s Service Canada account and details the start date of the claim, waiting period, benefit rate, and more.

Clinical Faculty members at Western University planning to take a Pregnancy/Parental Adoption Leave should initiate contact with Human Resources as outlined in the IMPORTANT box below.  It is recommended that you connect with Human Resources at least three months in advance of your planned leave.  The Clinical Faculty member will need to complete a signed application for benefits; benefits are not automatically payable.

Clinical Faculty members may also be eligible for benefits from the Pregnancy and Parental Leave Benefit Program (PPLBP) administered by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC).  Please explore this program directly with the Ministry:

If you are applying for benefits from the PPLBP through the MOHLTC they may require an income confirmation of your earnings and benefits from Western.  Human Resources will provide this confirmation if you apply for SEIB benefits as outlined above.  If you are not applying for benefits and require the income confirmation please make this request using the link in the IMPORTANT box below.
