You’ve pulled the late study session at Weldon, taken the mandatory walk up UC Hill in every kind of weather, and drank more than your fair share of The Spoke coffee. Now, the moment you’ve been working toward is finally here.
Western's 327th Convocation is just around the corner, running from June 8 to June 12 at the Canada Life Place in downtown London. As thousands of students prepare to cross the stage and celebrate years of hard work, convocation season brings excitement, reflection, and plenty of preparation for the big day. Whether you yourself are graduating this year or supporting your loved ones who are attending the ceremony, now is the time to start planning ahead for graduation day. This is your ultimate guide on what to expect, how to prepare, and a few tips and tricks to help make this milestone as memorable as possible.
What to Expect on the Big Day
After commitment and perseverance, the moment to celebrate your achievements is finally here. Walking into Canada Life Place on graduation day, you can expect a high-energy atmosphere, filled with a shared feeling of accomplishment, proud families, and a buzz of nervous excitement. Although convocation is a time of celebration, it can also feel overwhelming due to the fast-paced schedule, large crowds, and heightened emotions. Knowing what to expect beforehand can help make your graduation experience run smoothly and allow you to fully enjoy the celebration. Here are some things to keep in mind before the big day.
1. Plan Your Transportation Ahead of Time
With the ceremony taking place at Canada Life Place in downtown London, it is a good idea to plan how you will be getting there before the big day. Graduates and guests can use nearby parking lots, public transit, or drop off options to get to the venue. There is also no need to pay for transit, as your convocation ticket can be used as a free LTC bus pass on select routes between Western and Canada Life Place.
If you plan to drive, be sure to explore parking options ahead of time. Covent Garden Market is offering a special convocation parking rate of $12 for the day when using the pass available through Western's Convocation website. For more transportation and parking information, visit Western's Convocation Parking and Transportation Guide. Graduates and guests requiring accessibility accommodations are encouraged to review Western’s Accessibility information ahead of the ceremony.
2. Expect Large Crowds and a Busy Schedule
With thousands of graduates, family members, and guests attending the ceremonies throughout the week, it is going to be a very busy and lively atmosphere. Since there will be a higher volume of people moving through the downtown core, you should expect longer wait times at the venue entrances and in downtown. To keep things running smoothly, make sure to plan your day ahead of time and allow extra time for travel.
3. The Ceremony Will Go By Faster Than You Think!
This is the moment that you have waited years for, yet it often feels over before you know it. While ceremonies are approximately two hours long, many graduates find that the experience flies by in the excitement of crossing the stage and celebrating with classmates, friends, and family. Take the time to soak in the atmosphere, celebrate with friends and family, and most importantly appreciate how far you have come since your first year at Western. Whether it's capturing moments through photos, reconnecting with old friends, or walking across the stage, be sure to appreciate the experience. After everything you invested to reach this milestone, make the most of it.
Tips For a Stress-Free Day
Convocation is an exciting but also overwhelming experience. Between the large crowds, busy schedules, and high emotions, it is completely normal to feel a little stressed or anxious. However, planning ahead and staying organized can help make this experience feel much more manageable and help you fully enjoy the celebration. Here are some tips and tricks to having a stress-free graduation.
1. Arrive Earlier Than You Think You Need To
I know this might sound like total common knowledge, but on a day this massive, it is incredibly easy to find yourself running late. To make sure the day remains stress-free, graduates are required to arrive at Canada Life Place by 8:45 a.m. for morning ceremonies and 1:45 p.m. for afternoon ceremonies, so be sure to factor this into your schedule and leave yourself plenty of time to get settled before the ceremony begins. Arriving early will give you enough time to check in, order your regalia onsite if you missed the advance ordering deadline, and find your seat before the ceremony begins.
2. Leave Personal Items with Guests
You are not allowed to carry anything with you across the stage; this includes purses, backpacks, and celebratory flower bouquets. There is also no secure storage for personal items in the venue, so make sure to hand any personal items to your guests or leave them on your chair before you walk the stage.
3. Plan Time for Photos After the Ceremony
One of the most memorable parts of convocation is celebrating with your loved ones and capturing these special moments through photos. Popular photo locations around campus and downtown can get busy fast, so make sure to leave extra time in your schedule.
Graduates can also take advantage of complimentary professional photos offered by Western Alumni after their ceremony. This is a great opportunity to capture a high-quality keepsake of your graduation day while celebrating with family and friends. Be sure to check Western's Convocation Photography page for details on photo locations and availability.
4. Make Sure to Enjoy the Moment!
My most important tip for your big day is to simply let it all sink in. After all the hard work you put into this moment, take the time to enjoy every moment and reflect on the journey that brought you here. Try not to stress about small details or worry about whether or not everything will go perfectly and instead focus on being fully present in the moment. Laugh with your friends, take photos, celebrate with your loved ones, and hold your head high when you walk across the stage.
