FAQs

Can this program be taken part-time or online?

The MMASc program is only offered in a full-time format. Expect to spend roughly 40 hours per week engaged in schoolwork (in class and on assignments/studying). The MMASc is offered in person at Western University, with no exceptions. MMASc classes are very dynamic and interactive between instructors and other peers.

What type of background (degree) is required? Do I need business experience?

The MMASc program admits students with undergraduate backgrounds in science, health science, social science, or engineering. Our program does not accept students with business degrees or minors in business. The MMASc course offerings often overlap with content seen in business degrees; however, these courses are offered at the graduate level. If you are unsure about your previous business education, contact our program office at mmasc@uwo.ca.

Do MMASc students receive financial assistance in the form of fellowships or teaching assistantships?

Since the MMASc is a one-year, course-based professional science master's program with a cooperative education term component (the Experiential Learning Opportunity term), students do not complete a research thesis. Consequently, MMASc students do not receive Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, or scholarships. Information on external funding options is found on the Financial Assistance Page.

Is the co-op guaranteed? Do I need relevant experience in order to secure a co-op?

The experiential learning opportunities (most often known as co-op) are found and secured by the student; it is not guaranteed/ a placement. The MMASc Career Services Officer provides students with a lot of support to help you secure a co-op (i.e., networking events, dedicated MMASc job board that is exclusive to our students, with many exclusive job postings, resume review, career seminars, etc.).

Ultimately, it is up to the student to conduct a rigorous job search and secure (apply and interview) a co-op position. You can determine the direction of the position you'd like to pursue, depending on your interests and availability of jobs at the time.

You do not need to accrue specific experience prior to starting the MMASc in order to secure a co-op position.

How do I make my application stand out?

We always recommend following our application information closely. Applications that stand out have very personalized statements. We want to hear about why the MMASc is such a good fit for you (i.e., building off your previous experiences) and your future career goals. Your statement and resume should highlight any leadership experience, if possible. If English is not your first language, following the English Proficiency guidelines is crucial.

What support do you offer for international students?

Western’s International & Exchange Student Centre can connect you with visa and permit, international student life and program and service information.

How can I check the status of my application?

Applications are first reviewed by the School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. Applications that meet the basic requirements are forwarded to the corresponding department for review. Generally, the first round of offers is made for applications received by the January deadline – these go out mid-February. Subsequent rounds of offers typically go out each month following, until the beginning of August.
