Internship Project: Youth in artisanal small-scale mining

Lydia is passionate about development, especially in sub-Sahara Africa. With an inherent desire to help the marginalized in society, she has taken courses in international development and her current research focuses on youth in artisanal small-scale mining in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The Upper East Region, although one of the least populated areas in Ghana, is plagued with high youth unemployment; and the small-scale mining sector is gradually becoming a safe haven for the majority of the youth. This project sets out to investigate occupational health perceptions among the young miners as they engage in this hazardous activity.
