2023 Competition Information
We are happy to announce the Western University High School Vocal Competition taking place on Friday, October 20 from 1:30-4:30pm.
If you are a Canadian secondary school student preparing to audition for post-secondary studies in music, this is a great way to prepare your audition repertoire. If you are in Grades 9-11, this is a great way to experience Western’s voice area, meet professors and students.
The winner will be awarded a cash prize of $250. There are three runners up prizes for a choice of tickets to an upcoming opera production or voice lesson with one of our instructors. All participants will receive written feedback on their performance as well as a recording of their performance.
When is the competition?
Friday, October 20, 2023 from 1:30-4:30pm.
Participants are required to be available during this full time. Exact timeslot will be confirmed on October 15. You will have access to a practice room ahead of time.
What is the deadline to register?
Friday, October 13 (11:59pm Eastern time)
How do I participate?
Prepare two (2) art songs to be performed live on October 20. One must be in English, and the other must be in either French, Italian or German.
Ten minutes maximum (combined)
Collaborative pianist is required. Either bring your own or we will provide one free of charge.
How are the winners chosen?
- Precision of musicianship and performance practice
- Lyric diction
- Current level and potential of artistry and performing
Winners will be announced 15-20 minutes following the last performance

- Bethany Hörst (Voice Instructor)
- Todd Wieczorek (Voice Area Coordinator)
- Other participating Voice faculty members will be attending
