In the heart of southwestern Ontario, London is accessible by road, rail or air. Lieutenant-Governor General John Graves Simcoe wanted the forks of the Thames River as the future site of the provincial capital because of its beauty and accessibility. The north branch of the river runs through Western University. Getting around the city by car, bike or foot is relatively easy because of the grid layout.
