This year's Homecoming gathered together our Music alumni, faculty, staff and students for a number of wonderful events during our last weekend of September 2016.
On Thursday evening we kicked off our Homecoming Celebration with a Concert by Tafelmusik, Canada’s award-winning baroque orchestra. Friday brought us two events: our first Fridays @ 12:30 faculty concert of the year featuring Sharon Wei, viola; Sophie Louise Roland, mezzo-soprano; Simone Luti, piano; Leslie Kinton, piano; Thomas Wiebe, cello; Marianna Chibotar, piano; and Friday evening, our annual Alumni Awards Dinner where we celebrated the recipients of this years' Don Wright Faculty of Music Wall of Fame Awards: Tomson Highway, BMus'75, DMus'93; and Brenda Zadorsky, BMus'74, Dip Ed'75. Throughout the day Saturday, we came together in music to rehearse for our 2nd annual Alumi band and choir concert which we gave Saturday evening, followed by a reception. On Sunday afternoon we were graced with a Faculty Concert featuring seventeen of our esteemed faculty members performing works by: Luciano Berio, Bohuslav Martinu and Francis Poulenc.
15,000 Western alumni, beautiful fall weather, a Mustangs triumph over the Toronto Varsity Blues on the football field, and more than 30 events campus-wide combined to make Homecoming 2014 a weekend to remember.
Music alumni, faculty, staff and students attended a number of events over the weekend. On Friday we celebrated with Cameron Porter, BMus ’80, and Raymond Tizzard, BMus ’77, MMus ’82, as they received the Don Wright Faculty of Music Wall of Fame Awards. Family, friends and colleagues were on hand to applaud their achievements. Saturday brought over 70 musicians together to sing and play at our first ever Homecoming Concert – one which we hope builds into a Music Homecoming tradition. And, on Sunday we once again opened our doors to a cross-faculty panel event hosted by CBC’s Paul Kennedy, who led a discussion that explored the value of a university degree.
