Artist biography

Photography allows me to create and manipulate real-life objects and subjects into something that may appear to be imaginary; I have control over the outcome of the final image to produce nearly anything I can think of. With the use and understanding of proper lighting, angles, and post-production software, I am able to construct my envisioned atmosphere or overall mood within the work(s). Through this controllable medium, my practice explores two ideas that often connect with one another. The first idea is a surrealist approach to the human relationship with the unconscious mind. I tend to create a scene evoking a dream-like state of mind or one that appears normal, but has abnormal attributes throughout. The second idea that I investigate through photography is the inherent human connection to nature, specifically flowers and their medicinal history, spiritual meaning, and physical properties. I will frequently connect these two concepts, whether it be intentionally or accidentally, by integrating an abundance of floral imagery within the final piece(s). The relationship between the person and the floral imagery is executed in a way that is meant to be convincing on a digital or photographic level, but in reality, would be unnatural and unrealistic. In these images, the floral pieces, that I personally construct, will often be made to appear as though they are naturally blooming out of the person’s body or it will completely cover their face, erasing their identity; nature in these begins to consume us, as we have persistently consumed it. This not only creates a strange and eerie atmosphere throughout the image, but in doing so connects my thoughts on the human relationship to nature with my exploration of dreams and the unconscious; they are united through the common subject matter of the human psyche.
