Power and Global Health Day 2023: Poster Competition

Are you ready to showcase your creativity, research skills, and storytelling abilities? The Undergraduate and Graduate Student Poster Competition invites you to participate and share your insights on this year's theme: Allyship and Being a Good Neighbor.

Submit your work and join us for Power and Global Health Day on November 23 from 11:30-1:15 pm to engage with a community of like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and be a part of a dynamic event that celebrates innovation and collaboration. 

Creating Your Poster

Poster Format: Your poster, your canvas! Whether you choose a research-focused format or opt for a narrative approach, make it engaging and readable. Use your creative flair to convey your message effectively. 

"What did you Learn?": Share your discoveries. It could be specific research findings, a unique analysis technique, or insights into experiential learning from diverse settings. 

Connect to the Theme: When creating your poster connect to Power and Global Health Equity or Allyship and Being a Good Neighbour. 

Power and Global Health Equity: Share with faculty and other students about learnings you have related to Power and Global Health Equity. Explain how your work contributes to these broader concepts:

  • Social Determinants of Health and Health Inequalities
  • Structural Violence
  • Cultural Humility and Cultural Safety
  • Reconciliation, Decolonization and Indigenization
  • Power Dynamics
  • Health Policy and Advocacy

Allyship and Being a Good Neighbour: To support Western University non-Indigenous faculty and students in learning about how they can start a journey towards supporting Indigenous peoples through settler* allyship or being a good relative**. Explain how your work contributes to these broader concepts:

  • Show a good heart and mind.
  • Are recognized by the Indigenous Community.
  • Support Indigenous leadership.
  • Examine their positionality and biases.
  • Commit to undertake the work to unsettle, build, and grow relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Unlearn and learn through research and by engaging respectfully with Indigenous Peoples and Community.
  • Use privilege to advocate for and support Indigenous Community.

Takeaway Materials: Feel free to provide handouts or supplementary materials if you think they will enhance your audience's understanding. These can serve as valuable resources for those interested in delving deeper into your work. 

Additionally, the dimensions of your poster should be 90 cm x 70 cm. Feel free to use this template to start your poster or create one from scratch!

Submitting Your Poster

To submit your poster for review and approval, please upload it to our sharepoint folder. For clarity, we ask that you name your file in the following format “LAST NAME, FIRST NAME - TITLE”. To give ample time for our team to review each poster, the strict deadline for submissions is November 13, 2023 at 11:55 pm. Notification that your poster has been accepted will be sent out by November 17, 2023 at 11:55 pm.  

Printing Your Poster

Printing for posters will be available through The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. With the required dimensions printed on thin photo paper, the estimated cost is around $5-7 per poster, payable by cash, cheque, or credit card. Posters are typically printed the same day or next day depending on volume and can be picked up in the Dental Sciences Building, Room 4013.
