Healthy Habits for Internet Use

The internet is an exciting and useful place, but there are many menaces out there.   Viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, phishing attempts, hackers and more have the goal of getting your information or infiltrating your computer to use it for their own purposes.  how can you protect yourself from these online threats? Practice a few healthy habits.

  • Ensure your system is protected with the latest Operating System patches and Anti-virus software – Buckle Up!
  • Don’t give your personal information when requested through unsolicited emails or web pages – Don’t Get Phished!
  • Practice Safe surfing
    • Trust only reputable University and corporate sites.
    • Close unwanted pop-ups without responding to requests or clicking their buttons – X-OUT!
    • Don’t download ‘free’ software at work – Say No to Gifts from Strangers!
  • Protect Your Data
    • Think before storing data – How sensitive is it?  Who Should see it?  How can I protect it?
    • Ensure important data is backed up.
    • Use extra precautions if the data is kept on mobile devices or media – Leave it, Lose it!
    • Use Strong Passwords – they protect your valuables and should never be shared - Passwords are like Underwear!

Learning and Development staff are collating the suggested strategies generated at each table. This information will be sent back to each participant for further revisions to ensure their points were effectively represented. This information will then be submitted to the Strategic Planning Task Force. For additional information on the Strategic Planning process please visit: http://www.uwo.ca/pvp/strategic_plan
