Welcome to the CCAA!

Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging

The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) is Canada’s leader in current research and program development for improved physical ability and healthy aging for older adults. It is a not-for-profit national research and education centre within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The CCAA is unique in Canada as it promotes physical activity and the well-being of older adults through a combination of basic and applied research, educational resources and community-based programs.  Basic and Applied research activities are the foundation of the CCAA’s community-based physical activity classes for seniors and the leadership training courses for individuals who work with the ageing population. Basic research is conducted by researchers and graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Community Outreach team is responsible for applied research which takes place off campus at the Mount.

Over 450 London seniors participate in CCAA exercise classes each week. The physical activity class model is based on research conducted at the CCAA and includes cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility training. More than 1000 people from across Canada are trained in CCAA leadership training courses each year. These courses are also evidence-based and introduce physical activity programs for seniors across the mobility spectrum.

Enjoying the Summer Sun without Suffering from the Heat

The cure for many cases of cabin fever is here: warm summer sun. Everything from barbecues to beaches bring people out in droves to enjoy the warm weather. But oftentimes, the summer brings more than bright, sunny days. It can also bring sweltering heat and unbearable humidity that makes even the brightest summer days seem dreary. These dog days of summer are hard on the body and can result in anything from heat stroke to heat exhaustion if above-normal temperatures are not taken seriously -- especially by the older adults.

View this helpful PowerPoint presentation about handling the heat by clicking here.
