> Introduction to Myrah Kukiiyaut’s Drawings

Myra Kukiiyaut draws on her lived experience as a participant in the change from a barter economy to capitalism in the contemporary Canadian Arctic. Relying on subtle tonal and textural modes of visual description, Kukiiyaut pictures miners uncovering new forms of wealth under the earth, hungry children waiting for Mother to provide food in the new money economy, delicately whirling helicopters and large numerals indicating currency denominations intrinsic to the new system of exchange.
