11th Annual Graduate Student Conference
Keynote Speakers: Maria Salazkina (Colgate University), Allan Pero (UWO), Juan Luis Suárez (UWO)
Originating from the Greek aisthtikos, meaning "sensuous" and perceptible" and the Latin excessus for "digression", "departure" and "death", in their contemporary use aesthetics and excess together connotate the "beautiful" and "immoderate indulgence". How might the "Aesthetics of Excess" be theorized and philosophized? What is its history and how does it intersect with power (i.e. consumer capitalism, fascism, totalitarianism)? Is excess always transgressive? Is the aesthetics of excess gendered? Is there a relationship between the aesthetics of exces and ethics and morality? What are the different spheres of cultural experience in which it becomes manifest? We have welcomed paperst that considered the relationship between the aesthetics and politics of excess and encouraged participation from students of literature, theory, film, music, philosophy, women's studies, cultural studies, political science, history, theology, classics, the social sciences, visual arts and media studies.
