Course Aims

Korean 1030 is an introductory modern Korean language course with an emphasis on the colloquial, spoken aspect of the language. It is primarily designed for students with very little or no prior knowledge of Korean. The course aims to:

- develop communicative and written proficiency in Korean language
- help the students to learn basic pronunciation and vocabulary, and gain a solid
foundation in Korean script and sentence patterns.
- Facilitate the students' general understandings about Korea, language and people by
dealing with relevant topics pertaining to Korean culture and values. In so doing,
this course will incorporate Korean video clips and web-resources.
- help the students to be more proficient inter-cultural communicators.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

- communicate and discuss simple topics in Korean. (e.g. introducing people,
identifying things, asking about locations and directions, telling time,
ordering at a restaurant, asking for people on the telephone, shopping, talking
about the past/future events etc.)
- write and read simple paragraphs in Korean (e.g. university life, family, weekend)
- broaden general understandings about Korean culture and values.
- become more effective inter-cultural communicators

Lesson Test: There are a total of 7 tests. Each test will be administered when every other lesson finish. Each test is worth 4% of your final grade.

Final Exam: The goal of the final exam is to test your overall understanding of the Korean language skills taught through this course. The two hour exam will be scheduled during the regular exam period in April. All lessons from the textbook will be covered.

Vocabulary quiz: Every time a new lesson is introduced, the students will have a short vocabulary quiz based on the second part of each.
Attendance: Unexcused absences will be deducted from the attendance mark (0.5% deduction for each absence). In case of emergency, students are expected to inform the instructor of their absence ahead of the class time.

Participation: Students will learn language through various task-based activities - (Class performance) pair/group work and role plays. You are expected to participate at all levels. Lack of participation or disruptive behavior (chatting, etc.) will result in deductions from participation grade.

Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class. The ordinary classroom assignment is to submit the workbook that comes with the textbook. Please note that the workbook submission is due in the classroom hours prior to each lesson test. The marked workbook can be picked up in the department office (UC 115) a day after you submit the workbook. Besides the workbook submission, the students will be assigned other homework during the classroom hours (e.g. composition, journal). Assignments will be marked in A (good), B (pass) C (incomplete, insincere, copied). No late assignments will be accepted.

Oral Test: The first oral test(Interview) will constitute 4% of the students' overall grade while the second test (Presentation)will be worth 4%. Format and topics of the presentation will be announced in class.

Role-play: The students will be given a topic (chosen at random from a pool) and asked to carry a short conversation with their partner(s).

Reading Task: This is to help the students with their pronunciation, word spacing and overall fluency in the language.

Policies for a Make-up Test
In case that the students miss class due to an emergency situation, a make-up test will be provided. However, each student is only allowed to take only ONE make-up test for a missed lesson test and ONE make-up quiz for a missed vocabulary quiz during the entire school year (2008-09). Further missed quizzes/tests will result in a score of 0 on those quizzes/tests. Also, the student is responsible for arranging the make-up test with the instructor. Those who need to write a make-up test are expected to inform the instructor in advance that they will be unable to attend, and must write the make-up test before the quiz or vocabulary test in question is returned to the class.

Please Note: You are responsible for ensuring that you have successfully completed all course prerequisites (or have special permission from your Dean to waive the prerequisite) and that you have not taken an antirequisite course. If you are not eligible for the course, you may be removed from it at any time, and it will be deleted from your record. In addition, you will receive no adjustment to your fees. These decisions cannot be appealed.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a major academic offense (see Scholastic Offense Policy in the Western Academic Calendar). Plagiarism is the inclusion of someone else's verbatim or paraphrased text in one's own written work without immediate reference. Verbatim text must be surrounded by quotation marks or indented if it is longer than four lines. A reference must follow right after borrowed material (usually the author's name and page number). Without immediate reference to borrowed material, a list of sources at the end of a written assignment does not protect a writer against the possible charge of plagiarism. The University of Western Ontario uses a plagiarism-checking site called Turnitin.com.

Absenteeism
Students seeking academic accommodation on medical grounds for any missed tests, exams, participation components and/or assignments must apply to the Academic Counseling office of their home Faculty and provide documentation. Academic accommodation cannot be granted by the instructor or department.
