Undergraduate Program
The Department of Biology oversees the largest undergraduate program in the sciences at the University of Western Ontario. The popularity of our program reflects the fact that Biology is a dynamic, interesting and important field of study. The students and faculty are interested in the study of life from molecular, cellular, organismal, community and global perspectives. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to offering a strong and exciting undergraduate curriculum and we take great pride in our award-winning teachers and the accomplishments of our students. Our undergraduates receive first-rate training in innovative classes.We provide hands-on lab experience in most courses and our innovativelab-only course Bio 2290F/G emphasizes student input into design andstudents learn a variety of modern techniques. The success of thiscourse has inspired the development of similar lab-only courses (3625F/G, 3326F/G, 3596A/B)at the third year level. Our undergraduates take advantage of theopportunity to work closely with our faculty in research projectsduring their fourth year of study (Bio 4970F/G and Bio 4999E, and many can be found in labs and in the field during the academic year.
As part of New Academic Choices, the Department of Biology offers several different modules, which reflect the essence of Biology at Western. Entry into any of these modules is via the Biological and Medical Sciences First Entry program. The hallmarks of these modules are broad training in biology at the introductory and intermediate levels and opportunities to concentrate in certain sub-disciplines at the advanced levels.
