London Hip Fracture Interest Group (HFIG)
Mission
The Hip Fracture Interest Group (HFIG) is a multidisciplinary body of clinicians, administrators, epidemiologists, health planners and health economists whose aim is to create an evidence-based system of prevention and management of hip fractures. The group is focusing on identifying best practices, as well as system wide care plan development, leading to a well-integrated system of care for hip fracture patients.
Vision
The group’s vision is improved quality of care and outcomes for hip fracture patients in the Southwestern Ontario region.
HFIG Goals
- To reduce the incidence of hip fracture in Southwestern Ontario
- To optimize the care of patients with hip fracture in the Southwestern region
- To optimize the utilization of health care resources across the continuum of care, in the management of hip fractures
The HFIG has met on a monthly basis to explore the system of hip fracture prevention and management in the London area. Three groups have explored issues of prevention, of acute care management and of post-acute care management, in particular, rehabilitation. Each group is exploring the current functioning of their segment of the system and evaluating it against such evidence as is available.
The project has focused on such matters as increasing the diagnosis of osteoporosis in hip fracture subjects and instituting appropriate treatment; the issue of weight bearing restrictions following surgery; communication of critical information between the segments of the system; and instigating a post hip fracture exercise program to encourage return to full function. With Clara's help, we will prepare a series of recommended actions based on a critical appraisal of the literature as we move towards an evidence-based care plan. This, we expect, will be unique since it will be system-based and not confined to one segment or institution.
This initiative was partly instrumental in stimulating the formation of a national group which will focus on fracture prevention in the elderly. They met for the first time in Vancouver in September 1997.
In November1997, we entertained two visitors from the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Rehabilitation and Aged Care Services, Australia. Drs. Ian Cameron and Susan Kurrle talked about the use of hip protectors to prevent hip fractures
