SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES/AWARDS/PRIZES

1. New Scholarship and Award Conditions

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following terms of reference for new scholarships, bursaries, awards and prizes:

HBA Ivey IPO Award (Richard Ivey School of Business)

Awarded to students based on academic excellence and leadership qualities as demonstrated by involvement in University or community activities. Students must submit a current resume and an essay (maximum 1000 words) outlining their thoughts on what giving back to the community means to them, including their past experience and future plans for community involvement. The HBA Scholarship Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business will review applications received by May 1 to select the recipient. This award is made possible by the generosity of the HBA Ivey IPO through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $1,000 in 2001-2002; the value of the award in 2002-2003 and beyond will be dependent on income available from the endowed fund.

Effective: May 2001

George Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund (Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Dentistry)

Awarded to a full-time student registered in fourth year of the Dentistry program who exhibits caring and compassion toward patients as well as academic achievement in course work. Selection will be made by the School of Dentistry Scholarships Committee. This scholarship was established by generous donations from the Dentistry Class of 1978 in memory of George Smith through Foundation Western.

Value: $350

Effective Date: May 2001

Dr. Mark K. Inman Scholarship (Faculty of Social Science, Economics)

Awarded to a student in any year of an Economics program based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Social Science. This scholarship was established by a generous donation from M. Elizabeth Dillon in honour of Dr. Mark K. Inman through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $1,000 annually

Dr. L. Stuart Lauchland Scholarship (Faculty of Engineering Science)

Awarded to a student in any year of an Engineering Science Program based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Engineering Science. This scholarship was established by a generous donation from Dr. Richard M. Dillon through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $1,000 annually

Mr. David Wu - Government of Ontario Graduate Research Scholarship (Faculty of Graduate Studies, Health Sciences)

Awarded to a full-time Masters or Doctoral student conducting research in Health Sciences with a preference for the areas of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. The award will either be designated as an OGS or an OGSST. An OGS recipient will be selected by the Province of Ontario will be based on academic achievement. An OGSST recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Graduate Studies based on academic achievement and research potential. This scholarship was established by a generous donation from Mr. David Wu.

Value: 1 at $15,000 annually

Effective Date: May 2001 - May 2010

These funds will qualify for a 2:1 match under the Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) Program.

McConnell Family - Government of Ontario Graduate Research Scholarship (Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Clinical Neurological Science)

Awarded to full-time Masters or Doctoral students conducting research in the field of Neuroscience. The award will either be designated as an OGS or an OGSST. An OGS recipient will be selected by the Province of Ontario based on academic achievement. An OGSST recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Graduate Studies based on academic achievement and research potential. This scholarship was established by a generous donation from members of the McConnell Family through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $15,000 annually

Effective Date: May 2002

These funds will qualify for a 2:1 match under the Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) Program

Leonora Sheppard Award in Family Medicine (Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Medicine)

Awarded to a student in the final year of Family Medicine residency based on clinical excellence with a certificate or registration to practice medicine in Ontario and a recognized physician remuneration mechanism, such as a valid billing number or equivalent. The recipient of the award intends to practice in Ontario for a minimum of five years after the completion of the residency program, and is deemed by the selection committee to be committed to comprehensive community family medicine. Preference will be given to students who intend to practice in Southwestern Ontario including Kitchener-Waterloo. Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee made up of the Associate Dean-Postgraduate Education, Chair-Family Medicine, Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, Post-Graduate Education Administrative Officer for Medicine, a resident representative, and a community representative. This award was established by a generous donation from Leonora Sheppard through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at approximately $12,000 annually

Laura and Ed McLeish Scholarship (Faculty of Education)

Awarded to a student pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree at the Intermediate/Senior level, based on academic achievement, preferably with Mathematics as a teaching subject. The recipient will be selected by the Associate Dean (Program). This award is made possible by a generous gift from Laura McLeish through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $500

Smith Company Commercial Real Estate Services Awards in Sales Management (Richard Ivey School of Business)

Awarded to one second-year HBA student in the quarter-course 451, Sales Management, offered in second term. The award will be made to the student who best demonstrates an understanding of the importance of sales and salesmanship for the success of any Canadian organization. This student must also demonstrate a desire to promote the sales function at all levels of any business. The HBA student will be identified with the assistance of the professor or professors of the course. The award will be announced to the class at the beginning of the appropriate term in the academic year amd the award will be presented on the last day of class, or as close to this date as possible. This award was established by a generous donation from Smith Company Commercial Real Estate Services.

Smith Company Commercial Real Estate Services Awards in Marketing Management (Richard Ivey School of Business)

Awarded to one first year HBA student enrolled in Bus 301 Marketing Management. Students interested in the award must complete an application form indicating that they have applied for a sales-related summer position and submit a five hundred (500) word essay on why they believe that sales and salesmanship are important for the success of any Canadian organization. Applications and essays must be submitted by January 30th and will be evaluated by a professor in the Marketing area group. The award will be announced to the class at the beginning of the appropriate term in the academic year and the award will be presented on the last day of class, or as close to this date as possible. This award was established by a generous donation from Smith Company Commercial Real Estate Services.

Value: 1 at $1,000 annually

Robbie Nash Football Bursary (Any Faculty)

Awarded to an undergraduate student who has completed one year at the University of Western Ontario in any Faculty, who demonstrates financial need and is a current member of the intercollegiate football team. This

bursary was made possible by Debbie Nash, in honour of her husband, Robbie Nash.

Value: 1 at $200 for 2001-2002 academic year only

2. Scholarship and Award Revisions

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following revisions to the terms of reference for scholarships, bursaries, awards and prizes:

Change in number from: 1 or more, not to exceed $3,000 annually

Change in criteria from: Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in any year in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Science who demonstrates financial need.

To: Awarded to a full-time graduating student enrolled in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering Science who demonstrates financial need.

James and Beverly Thompson Student Awards (Any Faculty)

Awards to be put on hold for May 2001, and to be continued in 2002-2003.

Sylvia D. Chrominska HBA Award (Richard Ivey School of Business)

Change in criteria and value from: Awarded biennially to a student entering first year HBA program based on financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to female students. The award will continue in year two upon successful completion of year one. If a recipient does not retain the scholarship, a new student will not be selected. Applications for this award can be obtained from the HBA Program Services office at the Richard Ivey School of Business and must be completed by August 1. The HBA Scholarship Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business will review and select each award recipient once financial need has been determined Student Financial Services. This award was established by a generous donation from Sylvia D. Chrominska (HBA '75)

Value: 1 two-year continuing award of $1,500 offered biennially

Effective from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005 or as long as funds permit.

To: Awarded annually to a student entering first year HBA program based on financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to female students. The award will continue in year two upon successful completion of year one. If a recipient does not retain the scholarship, a new student will not be selected. Applications for this award can be obtained from the HBA Program Services office at the Richard Ivey School of Business and must be completed by August 1. The London Police Services Board Awards (Any Faculty)

Change in criteria from: Available to spouses and natural or adopted children of active, retired or deceased police and civilian employees of the London Police Service who are full-time students at The University of Western Ontario or any affiliated college. These awards were established by a generous donation from the London Police Services Board and the London Police Association.

To: Available to partners (defined as married, common law or same sex partners) and natural or adopted children of active, retired or deceased police and civilian employees of the London Police Service who are full-time students at The University of Western Ontario or any affiliated college. These awards were established by a generous donation from the London Police Services Board and the London Police Association.

William L. Jeffries HBA Award (Richard Ivey School of Business)

Change in criteria from: Awarded to a student entering the first year of the HBA program with a minimum 'B' average. The award will be renewed in year two if the student maintains a minimum 'B' average. If the student does not meet this requirement, other year two students will be considered for this award. The HBA Scholarship Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business will select each award recipient. The award was established through Foundation Western by a generous donation from Jean Jeffries in memory of her husband William L. Jeffries (HBA 1932).

To: Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student entering the first year of the Academic Excellence Opportunity program. The award will be renewed for Year Two of the Academic Excellence Opportunity Program if the student maintains the defined criteria in AEO Year One. If a student does not meet the requirements, other Year Two students will have an opportunity to apply for this award. This award will be given to students who have graduated from a high school in the City of London or Middlesex County. Eligibility will be determined by financial need, as assessed by Student Financial Services, Office of the Registrar. Final selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business. Application forms for these awards are available from the Admissions Office of the Richard Ivey School of Business. The award was established through Foundation Western by a generous donation from Jean Jeffries in memory of her husband William L. Jeffries (HBA 1932).

Value: 1 two-year continuing award at $3,000 annually

Revisions to Awards to Use Unexpended Income

In accordance with the policies on the Use of Unexpended Income in Award Endowments and Recapitalizing Unexpended Income in UWO Award Accounts, revisions to the value of approximately 100 awards were approved by the Property & Finance Committee at its October meeting. A copy of this list may be obtained on request from the University Secretariat. Revisions are effective May 2001 and include a few 2002 dates.
