Scholarship/ Bursary/ Prize/ Award Conditions

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following terms of reference for new scholarships, bursaries, awards and prizes.

William F.M. & Helen Haight Bursary (Faculty of Science, Chemistry and Zoology)

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in a Chemistry or Zoology program who demonstrates financial need. This bursary was established through Foundation Western by the generosity of William (BA '47, BSc '48, MSc '50) and Helen Haight.

Value: $500

Effective: May 1999

Dr. Lillian Fuller Medical Student Access Bursaries (2) (Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Medicine)

Awarded to students in year 1 of the MD program who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to female students. This bursary is made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Lillian Fuller (MD '47)

Value: $3,112

Effective: 1999-2000 only

Joan and Geno Francolini Award in Engineering (Faculty of Engineering Science)

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in a concurrent Engineering Science and Honors Business Administration degree program who demonstrates financial need and a minimum 70% academic average. Applications are available from the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by September 30. Final selection will be made by the Scholarships Committee in the Faculty of Engineering Science. This award was established through Foundation Western by Joan (HBA and Secretarial Science '55) and Geno (LLD '84, HBA '54) Francolini.

Value: $1,500

Effective: May 1999

This award will receive matched funding from the Ontario Government through the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund program.

Hudson's Bay Company HBA 2 Award (Richard Ivey School of Business)

An award for an HBA 2 student interested in pursing a career in marketing and/or retail management. The recipient will have the opportunity to interview for a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. The student must be a Canadian citizen; have demonstrated leadership skills, demonstrated community and/or extra-urricular involvement. Preference will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in the retail environment. This award is not tenable with other student awards. Applications can be obtained from the HBA Program Services office at the Richard Ivey Business School of Business. The application deadline is May 1. The HBA Scholarship Committee of the Richard Ivey School of Business will review and select each award recipient. Applicants are required to submit a short essay outlining their reasons for pursuing a career in the retail industry with particular emphasis on their strengths that will make their career path a successful one.

Value: $1,670

Effective: May 1999 to April 2004 (five years)

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the Property and Finance Committee has approved the following revisions to the terms of reference for scholarships, bursaries, awards and prizes.

Melbourne & District Lions Club Bursary (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Medicine)

Change in criteria to add italicized commemoration: Awarded to a third year medical student who is progressing satisfactorily and demonstrates financial need. This bursary was made possible by a generous donation from the Melbourne and District Lions Club in memory of Jim McGeoch".

Dr. John W. Arnold Fellowship (Faculty of Graduate Studies, Biosciences Division/Zoology)

Change in value from $1,000 to $1,300

Effective: May 1999

Henry Wu Memorial Scholarships (Faculty of Health Sciences)

Change in number from 10 to 6.

Change in criteria from : Awarded annually to ten full-time undergraduate students who are registered in any year beyond year one. At least five of the qualifying students must be registered in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students must demonstrate high academic achievement (minimum 80% average) and leadership qualities, and must be a current member of an intercollegiate athletic team. Applicants must be in compliance with current OUA and CIAU regulations. These scholarships were created to encourage and recognize overall excellence in students by David Wu (The Athletic Club of London) in loving memory of his grandfather Henry Wu.

To: Awarded annually to six full-time undergraduate students who are registered in the Faculty of Health Sciences in any year beyond year one. Students must demonstrate high academic achievement (minimum 80% average) and leadership qualities, and must be a current member of an intercollegiate athletic team. Applicants must be in compliance with current OUAA, OUIAA and CIAU regulations. Applications are available from the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by October 31. These scholarships were created to encourage and recognize overall excellence in students by David Wu (The Athletic Club of London) in loving memory of his grandfather Henry Wu.

Jean Armstrong Fletcher Scholarship in Canadian History (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Change in frequency from $2,500 every other year to $2,500 every year

Dr. C.A. Thompson Ophthalmology Research Day Prize (Medicine)
Matthew and Cornelia Koens Scholarship (Education).

Change in effective date from May 1999 to May 1998.

Ogilvy Renault Award (Faculty of Law)

Change in effective date from May 1, 1999, to May 1, 1998.

Chancellor's Prize in Social Science General Program (Faculty of Social Science)

Change in criteria from: Awarded annually to the best Social Science student graduating from the 15-course program. The award will consist of a suitably engraved silver tray.

To: Awarded annually to the best Social Science student graduating from the 15-course program. The award will consist of a suitably engraved gift from the Faculty of Social Science.

Chancellor's Prize in Social Science Honors Program (Faculty of Social Science)

Change in criteria from: Awarded annually to the best student graduating from a Social Science Honors Program. The award will consist of a suitably engraved silver tray.

To: Awarded annually to the best student graduating from a Social Science Honors Program. The award will consist of a suitably engraved gift from the Faculty of Social Science.

G. Gordon Suffel Fellowship for Graduate Studies in Applied Economic Geology (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Change value from: $7,500 per eight months of the academic year to be awarded in two installments; in September and in January.

To: The annual award of $7,500 will be made in two installments (one in the Fall term and the other in the Winter term). At the discretion of the Selection Committee, the total value may be awarded to more than one recipient and the amount per recipient and per term may vary.

Faculty of Law Entrance Scholarships (Faculty of Law)

Change in criteria from: Awarded annually to twelve students entering first year Law, based on academic excellence in pre-law studies.

To: Awarded to students entering first year, based on academic excellence in pre-law studies.

Change in Value from: 12 at $1,250 each

To: Up to $5,000. The number of scholarships awarded will vary annually.
