Academic Success Program: Sport

The Academic Success Program: Sport helps student athletes with their transition to university learning and competing at the varsity level. The program supports student athletes by connecting them to learning peers (tutors) and Student Athlete Mentorship Program (SAMP) mentors, providing weekly Study Hub sessions, Kick-Off presentation series, and 1:1 academic coaching. New student athletes can also join the Summer Booster, transition programming that runs in August.

Summer Booster

Please check back soon for more details on Summer Booster 2022.

Study Hub

Study Hub provides student athletes with a quiet space dedicated to studying. Our virtual and in-person Study Hub sessions are staffed by graduate student mentors. Student athletes can also access learning peers (tutors) for course specific assistance or general learning skills help.

The specific dates and times for 2022-23 Study Hub sessions are to be determined. Student athletes will receive an email to their UWO email address when dates are times are finalized. Student athletes are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the PAL Centre for assistance with courses not offered in Study Hub.

Kick-Off Presentation Series

The Kick-Off Presentation Series includes transition workshops open to all first year student athletes, as well as second-year athletes looking for a refresher on the topics. Check back for the 2022/23 presentation schedule.

1:1 Academic Coaching

We want our student athletes to succeed in sport and in academics. Academic coaching provides student athletes with the opportunity to meet with the ASP: Sport Program Coordinator. In these 50 minute sessions, student athletes will share their academic concerns and goals, or discuss a specific learning strategy that they would like to improve or learn more about. Student athletes are encouraged to schedule an academic coaching session early in the term to build a strong foundation of learning skills and strategies, so that they can meet their academic goals and maintain their desired cumulative average.

To book an appointment, student athletes can email Wendy Latimer, the program coordinator.

Student Athlete Mentorship Program (SAMP) Mentors

SAMP mentors are upper year student athletes that have been trained to support incoming, first year student athletes make the transition to university living, learning, and university level sport. First year athletes will be matched with a SAMP mentor from the same program or faculty, and different sport.

The pairing between first year student athletes and SAMP mentors will take place in early September, and SAMP mentors will reach out to their mentees by the end of September.

First year student athletes will be able to request a SAMP mentor later this summer.
