Subject Areas: Ecological Indicators, Biological Sciences, Invasive Species, Biosphere, Climate
Description: Proposals should address thescales where the ecological research challenges are the greatest and where research has the greatest potential to transform thefield of ecology by addressing issues that have long hindered development of large-scale ecological research. Projects should striveto provide a mechanistic understanding of how multiple scale dynamics contribute to the structure, functioning, and change of thebiosphere and lead to the development of a more predictive understanding of ecological change. Proposals should be well groundedin theory, include novel approaches that will result in a theoretical framework for a predictive understanding of macroscale biology, and show great promise for enhancing basic theoretical understandings.

Application Details:

Two categories of awards will be made.Category 1 Awards: Exploratory or incubation grants to develop teams, explore a high risk idea, strategy, or innovative approach, hold workshops and develop plans to establish regional to continental scale networks of partners. These awards will be 1 to 2 yearsin duration. Category 2 Awards: Larger and longer grants to support full-fledged Macrosystems Biology Research or InnovativeTraining to conduct MacroSystems research. These awards may be up to 5 years in duration. Budgets for each type of awardshould reflect the scope and complexity of the work proposed.
