Petro-Canada Young Innovator Awards - Western and Robarts
The Petro-Canada program provides awards to new researchers at Western and Robarts to recognize, promote and support work that is particularly innovative, impacts positively on the learning environment in their department and has the potential to be of significance to society at large.
This year, in 2023, four winners will receive the designation of Petro-Canada Young Innovator for the period of the grant (one year):
- two awards will be given for the Western stream ($16,500 each)
- two awards will be given for the Robarts stream ($6,400 each)

This program is intended to help attract and retain bright young minds at Canadian Universities, colleges
Application Process
Western Award
This year two awards will be offered to full-time faculty members from any discipline. At the time of application, applicants must be within 8 years of their initial research-eligible appointment at a university (cumulative and not solely from the initial appointment date at Western), and currently hold an eligible research appointment at Western.
Please note that postdoctoral scholars are not eligible to apply for the Western Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award.
A full nomination package will include:
- A completed application form & attachments
- The applicant's current CV in any format, five-page limit
- A letter of support from the Faculty Dean is strongly encouraged or a well-recognized referee from the applicant’s field
- a ROLA (Research
On-line Administration) proposal submitted to the Western grant
Robarts Award
This year two awards will be offered to full-time faculty members with an eligible research appointment at Robarts and within 8 years of their initial research-eligible appointment at a university (cumulative and not solely from the initial appointment date at Western) or current postdoctoral scholars who work in a laboratory at Robarts Research Institute.
A full nomination package will include:
- A completed application form & attachments
- The applicant's current CV in any format, five-page limit
- A letter of support from the Faculty Dean is strongly encouraged or a well-recognized referee from the applicant’s field
- A ROLA proposal:
- Principal Investigators applying must submit a ROLA (Research
On-line Administration) proposal to the ROBARTS grant. - Where the applicant is a postdoctoral scholar, a ROLA Proposal must be completed by the appropriate Principal Investigator (PI) with the name of the postdoctoral scholar indicated in the title field.
- Principal Investigators applying must submit a ROLA (Research
Application Submission and Deadlines
- Complete a ROLA proposal no later than April 17th, 2023.
- Complete the application form, including the letter of support, and submit it to Western Research by 3:00 PM on April 24th, 2023 via the online submission portal.
