Renovation Updates

The winter weather has had an effect on some of the construction work. However, changes can be seen daily, and the contractor is working hard to complete the project in early 2015.

You can see the shape of the new recital hall. Behind the new skin of the old wing, work on the mock-ups of studio and practice rooms have fine-tuned the acoustics. Old problems with leaks have been eliminated with a new roof and waterproofing. In the new section (Block A) between Music and Talbot, the foundation for level 1 is almost finished. Block A was affected by the extreme weather more than the other parts of the project  because it  is a   concrete frame structure and  pouring concrete  during the last couple of months has been very challenging.

“Given the weather, the progress of the project has been quite remarkable,” said Fred Janzen, project manager.

The construction crew has successfully managed the challenges of the frigid weather. The tents you have seen between the buildings are put up as the crew provides temporary heat to protect freshly poured concrete.

“In 20 years, I don’t remember when we’ve had to shut down a job site for weather,” said Fred Janzen, project manager. This year, it has happened on three days because concrete can’t be poured below -10 temperatures.

The good news is the concrete for Block A is almost finished – and the weather should start to warm up soon too.

Note:
Water will be shut down in both buildings for a day, or less, to allow temporary rerouting. This is planned for Reading Week.

6. Tuesday, October 29/13 the Sound Acoustic Consultant will be onsite to meet with Subtrades.
7. Steel stud framing is starting on the 3rd Floor of B Block.

Longer term:

1. East stair demolition to begin next week.
2. Relocation of emergency generator service interruption to be determined. End of October–target for relocation.
3. Installation of stationary crane, electrical service to be reviewed.
4. Demolition of concrete on ground floor and installation of shear wall.
5. Underfloor services to be organized asap.
6. Sound Consultant required on site to review penetrations through acoustical walls.
7. Remaining precast to be removed from B Block.
8. Shoring to be started once Air Quality Test is completed.
9. Concrete work - 80% on Von Kuster Hall to be completed. 60% of C Building to be complete.
10. Crane base to be excavated and poured.

Notes from the most recent onsite meeting are:

(a) Demolition of ground, 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels continues and is nearingcompletions.
(b) East stair demolition to begin next week.
(c) Electrical and mechanical sheet metal demolition ongoing.
(d) Fire alarm reconfiguration in construction area to happen next week withverification and bell test Thursday morning.
(e) Block A (between MB and TC) layout caissons.
(f) Block C (other side of MB) caissons layout to begin next week.
NOTE - afterlayout and excavation -installing the footings will be occur.

August 26, 2013

As you make your way to campus you will see the progress of the renovations and construction.  Block B (current Music Building that is being renovated) is being gutted; levels 3 and 2 are complete and work on 1 has begun. Excavating in area for Block C (situated in front of MB 125 area) and the taking down of trees in preparation for excavation for Block A (between the MB and TC) has begun.

We have found ‘homes’ for all in Talbot College with some still in the north wing of the Music Building.  Do notice the different traffic flows when going between the MB and TC.  Some access will be temporarily closed but reopened as the construction moves forward.

  1. Fencing has been erected which outlines inaccessible areas.
  2. Mechanical and electrical connections between the part of the music building that is being renovated (Block B) and the part that is standing until the end of renovations/construction has been severed.
  3. The part of the music building that is being renovated (Block B) is currently being gutted with removal of walls, ceilings, windows and inner materials.
  4. Tonda has set up offices and a site trailer.
  5. Surveyor has Block C (new construction on the west side of Block B) laid out.
  6. Surveyor will lay out Block A (new construction between MB and TC) after necessary trees are removed.

I have had the good fortune to talk with some of you but not all of you about the most recent developments here at the DWFOM.  I entered the job Summer 2011 with renovations to begin in Talbot College, including the library as a phase two, but the budget was over thus we immediately had to re-group and re-examine the needs of the Faculty.

The goal was to increase the footprint of the Faculty of Music, a much needed increase due to enrolment now at 700 strong (with approximately 18% of that consisting of graduate students).  With the exit of Philosophy and Classics from Talbot College we have gained space but there was still the need for additional space in which studio teaching, classroom teaching and rehearsals could occur.

Thus – we started out by examining the current Music Building, so thoughtfully designed by Don McKellar and Clifford vonKuster and devised a plan that builds on the footprint of part of the current MB and expands with additional structures on either side of the portion of the building that rests behind the elevators (e.g., MB 125, studios of JP Bracey, John Hess, and Ted Baerg’s studios and everything above). 

Not only did we need extra space but we also needed to replace the HVAC system, which has a life span.  The current one is close to non-functioning thus instruments struggle.  Pianos are being stressed in terms of dehydration and too much humidity. We needed to build to code, codes that differ from when the current building was built.  Thus we need to update, upgrade, and enhance for 21st century technological and pedagogical needs.

The good news is that the current building functions well in so many ways that we could replicate and build on to what had been built in 1972. 

It has been a busy year. Bob Wood, Jeff Stokes, the architect (John Nicholson) and I have spent many hours working on the design. There has been consistent consultation with faculty and staff, town halls have occurred, and students have been consulted.  You can view the plans on the DWFOM website – Music Building Renovations, which is placed on the right hand side of the page. 

In preparation of the renovations and construction, we have moved 37 faculty members and their contents, many of whom are here in Talbot College in re-purposed spaces, with 10 in newly designed studio spaces (four on the fourth floor and six on the first floor).

The university has provided 80% of the budget and I will raise–with the help of Alumni Relations and Development, the development officer, and faculty and friends–the remaining 20%.  There has already been a campaign started by faculty members and some alums have begun targeting classmates to name a studio after the year in which they graduated. Others have begun to think about naming a rehearsal hall or classroom, with colleagues, after a professor that left a significant mark on their growth.

So we move forward with much excitement and chaos, but with excitement.   Do know that our Friday at 12:30 series will continue as well as concerts and recitals in PDT and vKH.

And do know that the library renovations are slated to begin as the renovated/newly constructed music building comes to completion (early 2015).

I look forward to further conversations with those who I have met and those I will meet, hopefully, in the near future.
