Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships Program
Scholarships for non-Canadians
The Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships Program provides an opportunity for international students from participating countries to conduct short-term study, research or professional development in Canada. These scholarship programs include:
- Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (students from Latin America and the Caribbean) NOTE: as of 2021 the Canada-CARICOM Leadership Program and Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship program have been merged into this program.
- Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) (students from ASEAN member states)
- Study in Canada Scholarships (students from Algeria, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda and Ukraine)
Western International administers applications for these scholarship programs on behalf of Western University.
Our participation in these scholarship programs is largely based on hosting visiting research students at Western. Visiting students would follow the Visiting Research Only application process either at the graduate or undergraduate level. The main stipulation is that students would identify a supervising faculty member at Western and they would not be eligible to enroll in courses for credit.
Faculty members who are planning to host a candidate are required to complete the following documents:
- Internal application form
- Supplementary documents:
- Letter of Invitation for the candidate
- Statement of Agreement Between Supervisors

Western International’s internal deadlines to accept fully completed applications with supporting documents for the 2024-2025 application round is as follows:
New: March 14th, 2024 for:
- Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)
March 8, 2024 for:
- Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program
- Study in Canada Scholarships
Incomplete applications cannot be submitted.
Notice Regarding Research Start and End Dates
It is important to discuss the expected research start and end dates with students and their home institution supervisor. These dates must be confirmed prior to completing Western's internal application form as this information is used to confirm eligibility for the respective scholarship application and to prepare logistical resources including student registration, health insurance, immigration documentation and reporting requirements.
The arrival date at Western should be no earlier than September 1st of the current year and no later than January 15th of the following year.
Funding for Canadian faculty members
The Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program provides full-time professors at Canadian post-secondary institutions with short-term opportunities to conduct research and/or teaching projects within Latin America and the Caribbean at the college, undergraduate, and graduate levels. The program aims to increase the number of institutional collaborations and student exchange agreements between Canadian and non-Canadian institutions eligible under the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program.
The program will grant awards to faculty members to teach and/or conduct research in ELAP-eligible countries.
