Briefing on Programs and Travel to Hong Kong

December 9, 2019

Winter Term & Summer Term 2020:

In light of the current situation involving the closure of classes and other operations at Hong Kong institutions, and without knowing when full operations are expected to resume Western International is recommending the cancellation of all student mobility programs to Hong Kong in Winter 2020.

This would include all university-sanctioned travel for students such as exchange, study abroad, faculty-led programs, research, practicums, internships, conferences, etc.

Western International has already been working with students to make alternate arrangements for exchange placements and to assist them with accommodations and other requirements for winter term. Our staff team is available to assist with further arrangements for the summer term as well.

Flexibility in Course Credit Transfer:

Given the circumstances, we ask the Deans and other academic leaders for their flexibility and assistance with respect to course credit transfer considerations, specifically for these students who have had to make alternate exchange arrangements at the last minute.

Advice for Travellers to Hong Kong

If a student is persistent in the desire to travel to Hong Kong despite the advisory above, they must complete the Safety Abroad Steps for Students* AND complete the Special Authorization to Travel Form* well in advance, as part of our safety policy and procedures. (* see links below)

Travel to Hong Kong for faculty and staff members is at their discretion, however those travelling on tight itineraries and with concerns about the security situation may wish to reconsider their trip.

If faculty and staff wish to travel to the area, they are asked to complete the Safety Abroad Steps for Faculty and Staff, and advise their Dean/Department Chair and colleagues of their travel itinerary and plan.

We also recommend faculty and staff use the additional resources of International SOS, a worldwide support service Western subscribes to. Before travelling, individuals can access detailed in-country reports and download the assistance app. They also have access to worldwide emergency assistance 24/7 through International SOS.
