Transportation in London
At Western, new (full-time) students will be able to use their student cards as a London Transit Commission bus pass. The London Transit Commission (LTC) operates public bus transportation in London and provides many routes through the city. Present both your bus pass and WesternOne student card and get on a bus without paying the fare!
You can find bus schedules on the LTC website or pick up paper copies at the InfoSource booth in the UCC. You can also visit the LTC's Real Time Bus Information to check the location of your bus online.
Please visit London Transit Commission website for more information.
There are also several unofficial applications that you may download on your smartphone, which will provide you with bus times and information.
Part-Time Students and Non-StudentsBus Fares, Tickets and Passes
If you are not eligible to receive a bus pass through the USC or SOGS, you can still use London Transit by using cash or bus tickets.
- One-way bus fare (requires exact change)
- SuperSaver Bus Tickets: available at the LTC Office downtown and at many convenience stores.
If you do not have a bus pass, ask for a ‘transfer’ after paying for your ride and save it to show to the next driver. Transfers give you approximately one hour and thirty minutes to get on your next bus or buses, including return trips, without paying again.
Monthly Bus Passes give you unlimited bus trips for a month or unlimited bus trips from Monday to Friday. You must purchase your first bus pass at the LTC office downtown and pay for your new photo identification. After that, you can buy bus passes at Western Connections and some convenience stores. Show your pass to the bus driver each time you get on the bus.
Visit the LTC Fares Website for more information about pricing.
Free shuttle buses run between Brescia University College and King’s University College via main campus from Monday to Friday. You do not need to show a bus pass. Bus routes are identified by a number on the front of the bus. Bus schedules and maps are available at the UCC, on the buses and on the King's website.
The University Students' Council (USC) operates the Mustang Express, a late night shuttle service that provides students with safe transportation from downtown London after the LTC buses have stopped operating. For details please visit Mustang Express website.
During the December and April exam periods the USC arranges a late night Exam Shuttle service for all students that departs from the Natural Science Building and Oxford Drive (in front of the UCC).
It is safe to take a taxi in London. Taxis charge either per kilometer, or per zone and all charge a small fee as soon as you sit down ($3-$4)
Note: It is customary to tip the driver 10-15%.
Western's Purple Bikes is a non-profit group that can help you take advantage of the many bike paths between campus and downtown London. In addition to promoting cycling at Western, Purple Bikes offers two great services:
- Bicycle Rentals available for 48 hours, one week or on a monthly basis.
- Bike Workshops where volunteers provide tools and advice about how to fix your bike. They sell new and refurbished bike parts and sometimes bikes.
Membership is open to students, staff, faculty and the greater London community for a five dollar annual fee.
Please visit Purple Bikes for more information.
