At Western, we provide a number of internal courses and learning opportunities developed specifically for our employees. Programs are offered by Learning and Development Services and other Western partners.
The following courses are available to Western employees.
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. ASIST training at Western is delivered by certified Student Success Centre staff.
Learn effective planning strategies to move ‘important work’ forward, manage your daily schedule, and prioritize tasks. This course is for leaders and professionals who have discretion over their daily work schedule and who are accountable for delivering on work projects and priorities.
This certification program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada is available to staff, faculty and leaders at Western. Participants will learn how to help someone showing signs of a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. A new certification program is also available to adults who interact with youth on campus. These programs are offered by Rehabilitation Services in partnership with Learning and Development and other campus resources.
This online module is 30 minutes in length and provides participants with a basic understanding of Mental Health issues and of available campus and community resources. It covers the topics of Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Suicide and Eating Disorders. It is available to all Western students, faculty and staff.
This half-day program is for Western leaders who directly supervise and manage the performance of employees, and for Human Resource professionals who advise and support those leaders. You will learn effective communication strategies, understand your role in supporting an employee with a mental health condition, discuss the possible challenges of managing performance, and recognize resources available to support the employee and the leader. Prior completion of Mental Health First Aid is preferred.
The Operational Excellence Series supports Western employees who are involved in the administration of people, financial or other processes within an academic or support unit. This is a practical program focused on increasing your knowledge, skills and proficiency in the administrative aspects of your current role.
safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares participants to become a suicide-alert helper. This training will help you recognize invitations for help, engage individuals appropriately, and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. safeTALK training at Western is delivered by certified Student Success Centre staff.
The Western Certificate in Management (Western CIM) program is for staff and leaders engaged in human resource functions, accounting or finance as part of their role. Eight courses are offered on a variety of management topics – courses are customized for Western employees. Graduates receive a designation from the Canadian Institute of Management. The program is delivered by Continuing Studies at Western in collaboration with Learning and Development Services.
A number of large group learning opportunities are provided throughout the year for Western employees.
Held annually in February, Western’s Staff & Leaders' Conference offers engaging keynote speakers, workshops, and tours of some of Western’s key research and support facilities. The conference is a great opportunity for staff and leaders from across Western to come together and learn about current issues, trends, and best practices.
The Leaders’ Forum is an opportunity for Western’s senior Academic and Administrative leaders to discuss issues of strategic importance to the University. The Forum provides an opportunity for information sharing, idea exploration, dialogue and feedback.
The Professional Network Forum is an opportunity for Western’s professionals to meet and discuss matters of strategic importance to the University, and to learn about relevant learning and development topics.

Western’s Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children (CREVAWC) is focused on violence prevention, education and research. Online training is available at no cost to Western staff, faculty and students. Course topics include domestic and sexual violence prevention.
Continuing Studies offers a large variety of professional development courses, workshops, and certificates to members of the public. Many Western employees take Continuing Studies courses to further their career development.
Western Technology Services (WTS) provides a regular schedule of computer skills training workshops for employees on a variety of software applications.
Ivey’s Executive Education programs offer learning for leaders at a variety of stages in their career. Choose from the Leadership Suite of courses, or target specific career learning with their Focused Programs. Courses are two days to three weeks long and are offered in London or Toronto.
