About FHS DesignED

The FHS DesignEd team is an instructional design support unit for the Faculty of Health Sciences. This team is focused on the development and delivery of engaging curriculum content, supporting curriculum integration across the faculty, the development of online program resources, curriculum change and development across graduate programs, and the creation of high-quality, effective interprofessional workshops and resources.

OWL Tools

OWL is Western's online learning management system. It is home to official Western undergraduate and graduate courses, Western Continuing Studies courses, the Preceptor Education Program, and Human Resource courses, as well as independent, department, and group project worksites.

Gradescope

Gradescope is a digital teaching tool designed to streamline and standardize paper-based, digital, and code assignments. It supports problem sets and projects as well as worksheets, quizzes, exams, and papers. Gradescope can be added to an OWL site by request to WTS.

VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). VoiceThread can be added to an OWL site by request to WTS.

Collaborate UE

COLLABORATE UE is a virtual classroom tool available on OWL as a plugin tool. The tool is provided by Blackboard. Some main features of this plugin tool include:

  • Ability to host an online classroom where participants can listen and interact with their peers and instructors.
  • Options for the instructor to have an audio only session or a video and audio session.
  • Ability to screenshare to participants. Files/attachments can also be shared.
  • Participants can access sessions through their phones and through their computers.

To add COLLABORATE to your site, navigate to Site Info > Manage Tools. The tool can be found under the plugin tool section.

Articulate - Storyline

Articulate Storyline is a digital software tool for creating interactive e-learning modules. Articulate Storyline can be used to produce simulations, true or false and multiple choice quizzes and self-checks, drag-and-drop self-checks or assessments, screen recordings, and many other e-learning objects that learners can interact with. Articulate Storyline can be used to create interactive learning modules that present information in a non-linear or unconventional format, or modules that would benefit from interactive features.

Camtasia

Camtasia is a software suite, created and published by TechSmith, for creating video tutorials and presentations directly via screencast, or via a direct recording plug-in to Microsoft PowerPoint. Audio or other multimedia recordings may be recorded at the same time or added separately from another source.

PeerWise

PeerWise is a free, online system that allows student groups to author, answer, rate and comment on student-generated multiple choice questions. It incorporates social functionality common to many Web2.0 applications. Across multiple courses at several institutions, we have found that its use has produced:

  • A large number of high-quality student submissions
  • Enhanced student engagement with course material outside class hours
  • Enhanced performance on the end of course examination for the majority of students

Vimeo

Vimeo is a video hosting, sharing, and services platform. Vimeo operates on an ad-free basis, and instead derives revenue by providing subscription plans for video content producers and offering software as a service (SaaS) with video creation, editing, and broadcasting tools, enterprise software solutions, as well as the means for video professionals to connect with clients and other professionals. Vimeo focuses on the delivery of high-definition video across a range of devices.

Microsoft Stream

Microsoft Stream is Office 365's video hosting and sharing platform included in your Microsoft Office operating system.

YouTube

Microsoft Stream is Office 365's video hosting and sharing platform included in your Microsoft Office operating system.

Audacity

Audacity is a free and open-source digital audio editor and recording application software, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and other Unix-like operating systems.

Video Editing

Your computer likely has video editing software included in your operating system. Programs like iMovie, Windows Video editor app or Camtasia can help edit video content.
