Abstract:

Teamwork in interprofessional health care can improve care. Family Health Teams (FHTs) represent one model of interprofessional primary care in Canada. These new group practices are highly variable in terms of size, organization, composition, culture and leadership. This study investigated whether organizational culture, leadership and other practice factors predict team functioning in FHTs. This cross sectional survey comprised of previously validated instruments to assess team functioning, 4 organizational culture types, leadership, use of electronic health record (EHR), and the FHT’s organization and composition. The response rate was 66.7% (433/649). The study generated a number of relevant findings including that organizational culture and leadership appear to be the most important factors in predicting team functioning in primary care interprofessional teams.

This project was funded by the Ontario MOH (2008-2009)
