As of this writing, there have been no more terrorist attacks and the
stock market is making a recovery -- things are looking up. We again are hoping that this communication
finds you healthy and enjoying your various practices.
STAFF CHANGES:
Dr. Howard Lampe has continued as departmental Chairman until a new
Chairman is appointed. At this time a
number of candidates are being evaluated and it looks like June 30th
will be Dr. Lampe’s final day as departmental Chairman. We extend him our heartfelt congratulations
for a job well done over the past 13 years.
Dr. Wayne Matthews has embarked on a
new career direction and is now part of the teaching staff at the University of
Calgary. Wayne left us last summer and
we wish him all the best in his new position.
Dr. Lorne Parnes has taken on
the job of Program Director which Wayne Matthews had held for many years.
Dr. Kevin Fung is in his
final few months of a two year fellowship in head and neck surgery at the
University of Michigan and he is going to join the department in July of
2004. Kevin will be based at the
Westminster Campus of the London Health Sciences Centre.
Dr. Murad Husein is a graduate
of the University of Western Ontario medical school but did his Otolaryngology
residency training at McGill and is in the final months of a two year
fellowship in Paediatric Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa. Murad is also joining the department in July
2004 and will be based at the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario at the
Westminster Campus of the London Health Sciences Centre
Dr. Erin Wright has been
appointed Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology at St. Joseph's Health Care
London.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
As has been the custom with past editions of the newsletter, we update the alumni on the current status of the recent graduates.
Dr. Raj Sindwani completed a
postgraduate fellowship in endoscopic sinus surgery at the Massachusetts Eye
and Ear Infirmary and has taken up a position as Chief of the Department of
Rhinosinology at the University of St. Louis medical school.
Dr. Jason Franklin successfully
completed his certification examination and is currently doing a fellowship in
head and neck surgery with Dr. Pat Gullane at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Mark Raymond has also
successfully completed his certification and has joined Greg Price-Jones’
practice in Orillia.
Dr. Mansour Al-Assiry is
also doing a head and neck fellowship with Dr. Pat Gullane at the University of
Toronto.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES IN LONDON?
THE VOICE LAB continues its clinical and teaching role at Victoria
Hospital under the directorship of Dr. Simon McBride.
RHINOMANOMETRY LABORATORY at St. Joseph's Hospital
continues to be an integral part of the Rhinosinology Centre under
the direction of Drs. Janzen and Wright.
COCHLEAR IMPLANT PROGRAM at University Hospital continues to thrive under the very capable
direction of Dr. Lorne Parnes.
Ms. Kim Twitchell
has joined the program from the Hospital for Sick Children as the Chief
cochlear implant audiologist. Lorne continues to be the sole cochlear implant
provider in South Western Ontario.
UPDATE ON HOSPITAL RESTRUCTURING
We can’t see any light yet but I think we can finally see the
tunnel. The ultimate plan is to
concentrate all of the activities of the department, except for
Otology/Neuro-otology, at the Westminster Campus of the London Health Sciences
Centre. Otology/Neuro-otology will
continue to be practiced at the University Campus of the London Health Sciences
Centre. After many delays it would
appear that the first step in the restructuring is going to occur within the
next few months in that all major head and neck surgery will be concentrated at
the Westminster Campus. The first move
in this regard is the shift of Dr. Lampe’s practice from St. Joseph's Health
Care London to the Westminster Campus of the London Health Sciences
Centre.
Drs. Leboldus, Ruby, Janzen, Wright and Moore will continue to practice primarily outpatient surgery at St. Joseph's Health Care London until such time as the Westminster Campus is ready to receive these additional bodies. This would appear to be several years away (possibly never). Otology/Neuro-otology as mentioned above will continue to be located at the University Campus of the London Health Sciences Centre where Dr. Parnes will remain for the foreseeable future.
RESIDENTS' RESEARCH DAY 2003
Again, as has been the custom in recent years, Residents’ Day was held much
earlier than was the custom in the past.
In 2003 we had our Residents’ Research day on Friday April 25th. Our guest adjudicator was Dr. Mario
Imola and his
paper was entitled “Recent advances in Craniofacial
Surgery.” The date was late enough this
year that we were able to get in a little bit of golf on the following Saturday
and a number of us journeyed to Stratford on the Saturday evening to see an
excellent performance of “The King and I”.
The prize winners for the Residents=
Research awards included: Mark Raymond was the recipient of the Charlie Thompson Award. Tim Wallace received the Innovative Research
Award.. Jason Franklin was accorded the Golden Throat
Award and also the Most
Caring Resident Award.
Tim Wallace also was
the recipient for the prize for Undergraduate Teaching.
30th ANNUAL RESIDENT’S RESEARCH DAY
– Friday April 23, 2004
This again is a very significant milestone in the history of this
department and we hope to attract a large number of our alumni. As we did with the 25th reunion,
we are going to present a course preceding the actual Residents’ Research Day
for our current residents. This
hands-on “Facial Trauma and Reconstructive Workshop” is being organized by Dr.
Corey Moore.
On Friday, April 23, we are also encouraging our alumni to participate
in the afternoon session by giving short papers. If you are interested, please inform Yvonne Triesman (at any of
the numbers listed below) of your title at the earliest possible time but by MARCH
1 at the very latest (the
program has to be submitted for accreditation before the brochures could be
printed). The adjudicator will be
chosen from among the alumni who will be attending. Our two new staff members Kevin Fung and Murad Husein will also
be presenting papers in the afternoon session.
With a date in late April, if spring cooperates, we would hope to get in
some golf on the following Saturday and if people are interested, we would
certainly look into attending a preview performance of “Guys and Dolls” at
Stratford on the Saturday evening.
MOCOMP CREDITS
We will again be applying to have this Residents=
Research Day accredited. As mentioned
previously, please get your title into Yvonne by March 1 so we could be
accredited for the appropriate number of hours.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The research papers and resident line up are as follows:
DR. SUMIT AGRAWAL is in his first year on the Otolaryngology
service. He is no stranger to this event,
having been involved in paper presentations as an off-service resident and as a
medical student. Sumit was born and
raised in Fredericton and obtained a BSc at the University of New Brunswick. He then journeyed to Western to do his M.D.
and entered the residency program here.
Sumit will be presenting a paper on “Use of Video Oculography to
Determine the Efficacy of the Head-Shake and Head-Thrust Maneuvers”.
DR. KHALED ELJALLAH is the
second of our “junior” residents.
Khaled comes from Libya and tells us his home overlooks the
Mediterranean Sea. He received his
medical school training at the Al-Fatah University in Tripoli in Libya and then
journeyed to Canada to further his education in the speciality of Otolaryngology
here at Western. He will be discussing “Treatment of Nonmelanoma Facial Skin
Malignancies: Evaluation of Cosmesis,
Quality of Life and Costs of Surgery and Radiotherapy”.
DR. AVIK BANERJEE is in the PGY4 year of training. Avik was born in Kitchener, grew up in
Windsor and obtained his BSc degree from the University of Windsor. He went to medical school at the University
of Toronto before coming down the 401 to London to do his residency
program. Avik’s paper is entitled
“Intratympanic Steroids for Sensorineural Hearing Loss”.
DR. BRIAN HUGHES is
the second of our PGY4 residents and he is that rare specimen, a native
Londoner who went to high school in London and did all of his university
schooling at The University of Western Ontario. Brian will be discussing “Revised Diagnostic Criteria for Thyroid
Fine Needle Biopsy – Our Experience and Outcomes”.
DR. JASON ATLAS is
in his final few months of training.
Jason is a native of Toronto but also received some education at McGill
as well as his M.D. from Western. He
will be discussing “An Assessment of the Utility of Activity Limitations
Following the Particle Repositioning Manoevre”.
DR. TIMOTHY WALLACE
continues our tradition of residents from the east coast. Tim is also in his final year of the
program. Tim is a native of Moncton, and has an undergraduate degree from
Bishops University in Quebec and then graduated from medicine at
Dalhousie. Tim will be describing
“Cervical Rhytidities: A Prospective
Study for Improvement of Neck Skin Texture using Microdermabrasion and Chemical
Peeling Techniques”.
E-MAIL ADDRESSES
Again in the spirit of Asaving the trees@, we would certainly appreciate having your email
address so that the newsletter could be emailed to you in the future. Our email address is at the bottom of this page.
This being our 30th Residents’ Research Day, we want to make
it a special event. We have some new
faculty for you to meet and a great and interesting scientific and social
program and we would hope to see you in London on April 23rd.
Again, the Department of Otolaryngology here in London wish you a happy
and prosperous 2004 and hope to see you in the near future.
