The Best New Research: Finalists Announced for the 2018 Frontiers Spotlight Award - September 2018
Mega quakes pose major threats to modern society, generating casualties and fatalities, disrupting socioeconomic activities, and causing enormous economic loss across the world. Recent major disasters, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2011 Tohoku Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the 2015 Gorkha Nepal earthquake, are vivid reminders that complex risk cascades drive most earthquake crises. New research that addresses multidisciplinary aspects of cascading hazards and risks is essential to mitigate future catastrophic earthquake disasters globally.
Western seismologists, Drs Katsu Goda, Hadi Ghofrani, Sheri Molnar and Gail Atkinson, contributed to the Frontiers' Mega Quake Research Topic. This collection of research articles has been shortlisted for the 2018 Frontiers Spotlight Award as one of 10 finalists among 400 article collections across a wide range of academic fields. The winning team will receive UK100K to organize an international conference.
