Western encourages deferred travel plans

March 11, 2020 12:30 PM

Western continues to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) and takes its direction and shares information from federal, provincial and local health authorities.

FACULTY AND STAFF TRAVEL

Western strongly encourages faculty and staff to defer travel to all countries and regions identified by the Government of Canada as having active travel health notices for COVID-19. For those faculty and staff who do decide to travel internationally, please follow the steps listed here.

No member of the campus community is expected to travel on behalf of the university if they are not comfortable doing so.

Staff and faculty who have travelled outside Canada in the last 14 days are asked to follow these important directives from the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry clinical/dental faculty, staff, and learners and those who work in a clinical care environment are asked to review the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's COVID-19 Travel, Education and Visitor Policy.

STUDENT TRAVEL

To protect the health, safety and wellness of the university community, Western has cancelled future university-sanctioned international travel for all students until June 1, 2020. This includes exchange, study abroad, faculty-led programs, internships, research placements, community-engaged learning, practicums, conferences or any other international travel that is approved by a Western faculty member, department, staff member, Faculty, or non-academic unit. This applies to all students – undergraduate, graduate, professional or other.

For students already abroad, Western International is working closely with our international partner institutions, program coordinators and academic units to support them in either staying or planning for possible return.

We recognize the cancellation of programs and/or early returns may have a significant impact on students’ academic progression. As an institution, we are strongly committed to finding creative and flexible solutions to minimize the impact, and provide alternatives where available.

For questions related to international student travel, please contact Western International at travelregistry@uwo.ca or 519-661-2111, ext. 89309.

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO CAMPUS

Faculty and staff with plans to host international visitors on campus are asked to review and have visitors review important recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Middlesex-London Health Unit.

This includes, but is not limited to: visiting students participating in research placements; visiting faculty; visiting postdoctoral scholars; guest speakers; and other international visitors planning to come to campus for shorter periods of time.

Faculty and staff who have questions regarding international visitors should contact Western International at travelregistry@uwo.ca or 519-661-2111, ext. 89309.

A HEALTHY CAMPUS

The MLHU has great tips on staying healthy and preventing the spread of viruses, including handwashing and staying home when you are sick.

Since mid-January, extra cleaning and sanitizing measures have been taking place in common, highly trafficked areas on campus. Also, additional hand sanitizing stations have been placed across campus along with reminders to practice prevention techniques. Our student residences have also been taking extra precautions such as enhanced sanitization and cleaning of surfaces and the limitation of self-service food stations.
