Western’s Department of Chemistry was well represented at the 43rd Southwestern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) held March 21, 2015, on the campus of University of Toronto-Mississauga (UTM). We applaud those students that made the effort to participate, especially since their theses were due the day before.
The conference featured Plenary lectures by Professors Ulrich Krull and Patrick Gunning and 95 oral and 32 poster presentations of the undergraduate research projects (thesis projects) of students from thirteen universities. These presentations were covered in 7 symposia. Of these, Western presented 30 oral presentations and one poster. Professors Robert Hudson, Felix Lee and Mark Workentin accompanied our students and participated in the judging.
Western received 6 awards: Emily Rodrigues (Bio-chemistry), Lauren Irwin (Organic), Jeffrey Hendersen (Analytical), Seowoo Kim (Analytical), Christina Braun (Inorganic), and Ryan Maar (Inorganic).
This annual event was supported in part by the department of chemistry at Western that paid the registration fees for all participants, and the Chemistry Club who supported the undergraduate research of their colleagues by paying for the transportation. And of course the UTM organizers.
For those that do not know SOUSCC was initiated at Western….43 years ago with the leadership of Professors Phil Dean, Roland Haines and others. Next year’s conference will be hosted at Trent University.
