Profs. Ding and Sham Honored with Teaching/Research Awards

We are pleased to announce that Professor Zhifeng Ding is a recipient of the Faculty Scholar Awards. The award recognizes the complete Western scholar who has recently achieved prominence in teaching and research.  Zhifeng Ding has served his department, faculty and university with distinction through outstanding contributions to research, training and service. Professor Ding is a world expert in the field of scanning electrochemical microscopy.  Having pioneered the area of electrochemiluminesence of nanocrystals along with a Western Science collaborator, Ding has also developed new methods for electrodeposition and nanocrystal fabrication of light-absorbing layers in solar cells.  His considerable and consistently demonstrated ability to improve equipment technology and find novel applications will be further enhanced by the Faculty Scholars award.

Also, Professor TK Sham won this year’s Distinguished University Professorship (DUP). DUP is an award that recognizes the most outstanding members of the University community, those who have sustained excellence in teaching, research and service over a substantial career at Western. As a material chemist and global authority in the application of synchrotron radiation, TK Sham has made significant contributions to research leading to cheaper fuel cells, innovative molecular drug delivery systems and exploring the utility of silicon nanowires. A driving force behind the Canadian Light Source and recently named Director of the Soochow- Western Centre for Synchrotron Radiation Research, Sham has also held guest professorships at many universities across Asia and positions of administrative leadership within the international synchrotron community. All of this is a testament to Sham’s world-class work.

Sham is also valued as an instructor and mentor to undergraduate, graduate and post doctorate students. Many of his 49 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are now in prominent positions in industry and academia.

Please join us in congratulating Ding and TK for these prestigious and most warranted awards.
