The Returners: Seven Conversations

With Special Guests Artists:Jenifer Papararo & Kim Simon

Jenifer Papararo is the Executive Director of Plug Institute of Contemporary Art, Winnipeg. She was previously, the Curator at the Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG), Vancouver and the Program Director at Mercer Union, Toronto. She has curated many solo and group exhibition, most recently “Further Than I Can Throw A Stone”, a group exhibition of film and video work featuring Jeremy Blake, John Bock, Cécile B. Evans, Erica Eyres, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tristan Bera, Lisa Jackson, Karrabing Film Collective, John Knight, Kelly Mark, and Erika Vogt.


Kim Simon has been active as an arts writer and curator for over 20 years. She has been the curator at Gallery TPW in Toronto since 2003. TPW is a non-profit venue committed to addressing the expansive and vital role that lens-based images play in contemporary culture. Simon's curatorial work is grounded by an interest in the relationship between ethics and aesthetic experience across disciplines, thinking about the conditions of spectatorship, and experimenting with pedagogy as a form of creative practice. In addition to TPW, Simon writes and curates independently for other institutions. Past projects include exhibitions and writing for Oakville Galleries, York Quay Gallery, Doris McCarthy Gallery, the inaugural Nuit Blanche Toronto, Mercer Union, CV Photo, C Magazine, The Tree Museum, Mississauga Art Gallery and Musée d'art de Joliette.

The Department of Visual Arts at Western University is pleased to present the Art in the Public Sphere series of speakers and exhibitions. This important series provides unique opportunities to engage with local, national, and international artists, curators, and scholars. All events hosted at Western University are free and are open to the public. Coinciding with the departments' 50th anniversary celebrations, Visual Arts presents, "The Returners" featuring past graduates, faculty and artists originally from London Ontario. The Fall 2017 series is organized by Prof. Patrick Mahon as part of ongoing academic offerings at the Department of Visual Art at Western University.
