Research
My research explores image making and the capacity of certain “depictive” media such as painting, drawing, and photography to describe a world already deluged by images. I am particularly interested in investigating and maybe renovating an early modern notion of the pictorial that draws on the discourse of painting’s specific syntax and history, while finding expression in the local and familiar. It is a concern for imaging experience through the framework of the everyday that led to my interest in regionalism and its rich legacy here in London, Ontario.
But instead of thinking about the regional as something embedded in the past, as a kind of sentimental or nostalgic reaffirmation, I am interested in questioning its relevance and registering the distance between any initial radicality and it present state. In this way, the places I have chosen to depict are allegorical and speak to a kind of inhabited yet intermediary space. The following is an excerpt from a statement accompanying a recent show at MKG127:
“So the houses I have chosen to paint sit on this liminal edge: in-between the urban and the pastoral; not really modern, but also not classical, or permanent. I am not entirely interested in the everyday, or the banal; I am more interested in the indeterminate space of a rental home: occupied, local, immediate, but transitional and slightly empty."
