Scholarship/Prize/Award Conditions

The following new graduate scholarships were approved by the Property and Finance Committee and received for information by the Board of Governors at its meeting of February 3, 2000. The awards were approved contingent on approval by the Graduate Planning and Policy Committee and the Senate Committee on University Planning.

Government of Ontario - Port Elgin Rotarians Graduate Research Scholarships (4) (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded annual to a graduate student who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled full-time in an approved graduate program who is engaged in Science or Technology research. Preference will be given to students researching the genetic, biochemical or physiological basis of muscle development and function. The scholarship is based on overall academic excellence. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum A- (80%) average in each of the last two years of study at the post secondary level. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on research ability or potential, communication skills, and interpersonal and leadership abilities. These latter will be assessed by a research proposal written by the student, demonstrated research productivity, thesis advisor's assessment, faculty reference letters specifically requested for this purpose, and the graduate program's assessment of the candidate. Students must also meet the criteria set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies to fit the OGSST guidelines. Final selection will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Awards Committee. This scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from the Port Elgin Rotarians.

Government of Ontario - Nancy McNee Graduate Research Scholarship (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded annually to a graduate student who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled full-time in an approved graduate program who is engaged in Science or Technology research in the Biological and Life Sciences area with preference to a student conducting research in Psychology (MRC/NSERC supported areas only). The scholarship is based on overall academic excellence. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum A-(80%) average in each of the last two years of study at the post secondary level. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on research ability or potential, communication skills, and interpersonal and leadership abilities. These latter will be assessed by a research proposal written by the student, demonstrated research productivity, thesis advisor's assessment, faculty reference letters specifically requested for this purpose, and the graduate program's assessment of the candidate. Students must also meet the criteria set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies to fit the OGSST guidelines. Final selection will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Awards Committee. This scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from Nancy McNee.

Government of Ontario - Howard and Angela Wong Graduate Research Scholarship (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded annually to a graduate student who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled full-time in an approved graduate program who is engaged in Science or Technology research. Preference will be given to a student researching in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The scholarship is based on overall academic excellence. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum A-(80%) average in each of the last two years of study at the post secondary level. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on research ability or potential, communication skills, and interpersonal and leadership abilities. These latter will be assessed by a research proposal written by the student, demonstrated research productivity, thesis advisor's assessment, faculty reference letters specifically requested for this purpose, and the graduate program's assessment of the candidate. Government of Ontario - Faculty of Science Alumni Graduate Research Scholarships (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded annually to graduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time in an approved graduate program who are engaged in Science or Technology research. Preference will be given to students conducting research in graduate programs in the Faculty of Science and who are engaged in physical sciences research in applied mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, computer science (thesis based only), geology, geophysics, physics, statistics or physical geography. These scholarships are based on overall academic excellence. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum A-(80%) average in each of the last two years of study at the post secondary level. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on research ability or potential, communication skills, and interpersonal and leadership abilities. These latter will be assessed by a research proposal written by the student, demonstrated research productivity, thesis advisor's assessment, faculty reference letters specifically requested for this purpose, and the graduate program's assessment of the candidate. Government of Ontario - The Harry E. Foster Charitable Foundation (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded annually to graduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time in an approved graduate program who are engaged in Science or Technology research. Preference will be given to students conducting research in graduate programs in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and who are engaged in neuroscience research. These scholarships are based on overall academic excellence. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum A-(80%) average in each of the last two years of study at the post secondary level. In addition, applicants will be evaluated on research ability or potential, communication skills, and interpersonal and leadership abilities. These latter will be assessed by a research proposal written by the student, demonstrated research productivity, thesis advisor's assessment, faculty reference letters specifically requested for this purpose, and the graduate program's assessment of the candidate. Students must also meet the criteria set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies to fit the OGSST guidelines. Final selection will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Awards Committee. Nortel Networks MBA Award (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded to a student entering the first year of the MBA program, the award will be renewed for year two upon completion of year one with a grade average in the top half of the class. If a student does not meet this requirement, year two students will have an opportunity to apply for this award. The criteria for selection include academic excellence and demonstrated leadership ability. Preference will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in the technology industry. Each recipient will be given the opportunity to undertake a paid work term with Nortel Networks during the summer between the first and second year of the program. This award was established through funding provided by Nortel Networks.

John Booker Award (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded to a full-time graduate student pursuing graduate studies in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering based on academic achievement of a minimum of 78% and professional contributions to the engineering profession such as conference presentations, delegate to an engineering association, etc. Preference will be given to students who are conducting research in computational geomechanics. Preference will also be given to candidates who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, but with consideration to visa students in their third or fourth year of graduate studies at Western. The recipient will be chosen by the executive members of the Geotechnical Research Centre and approved by the Graduate Affairs Committee of the Faculty of Engineering Science. All students who meet the criteria will be considered for the award. This award was established by the Geotechnical Research Centre to recognize the academic achievement and professional contribution of students enrolled in graduate studies in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering.

FGS-CONACYT Scholarship (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

Awarded to a full-time graduate student accepted into the CONACYT program and who meets the Faculty of Graduate Studies criteria for admission and funding. The Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACYT) is a funding agency of the Mexican Government; its mission is to foster the advancement of Science and Technology by allocating public funds to support research and advanced training of Mexican citizens. To this end, CONACYT and the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies have reached an agreement whereby students are able to attend an Ontario university with both parties bearing some of the cost. Under the agreement, CONACYT undertakes to provide Mexican students at Western with financial support to meet the cost of their living expenses and to cover tuition and ancillary fees up to the level paid by Canadian citizens. The FGS-CONACYT scholarship covers the portion of international tuition in excess of the domestic fee.

Value: The international portion of the student's tuition. Varying amounts depending on the program in which the student is registered. A maximum of seven awards will be made in one year.

Effective: September 1, 1999
