FOR INFORMATION

1. Senate Membership - Alumni Association Representative

The Alumni Association has announced the reappointment of Gary Weese to Senate as a representative of the Alumni Association (term November 1, 1998, to October 31, 2000).

2. Revision to the Fall Senate Election Schedule

Regulations for Senate elections state:

...balloting will be conducted during a designated period at polling stations established on campus. The Secretary of Senate is authorized to delegate to the University Students' Council and the Society of Graduate Students and the MBA Association such authority as is necessary for the distribution and collection of ballots. The Secretary of the Senate may employ the USC Election Committee to supervise campaigning by candidates, to conduct on-campus elections of students to the Senate and to count the poll...

The USC is offering students the option of voting via the World Wide Web for representatives to the USC, Senate and Board of Governors. The USC has notified the Secretary of Senate that students who register at USC offices between October 13-16 will be given a confidential identification number. The individual numbers will restrict the voter to vote only in constituencies in which they are eligible. Each student's validation card will be marked to indicate that they have registered to vote. The marked card will also make them ineligible to vote a second time during the on campus polling. As an additional precaution, lists will be distributed to on campus polling booths showing the names of students who have voted on the Web. Poll clerks will check the list to ensure that individuals vote only once.

The USC has proposed that campaigning -- previously scheduled to stop at midnight on Monday, October 19-- be moved to Sunday, October 18. October 19 and 20 will be days designated for Internet voting. On Campus polling, previously scheduled for October 20 and 21, will be conducted on October 21 and 22 instead. All candidates were informed of these changes at the Mandatory All Candidates Meeting held on October 1st.

3. Candidates for Degrees - Fall Convocation 1998

On behalf of the Senate, the Provost approves the list of Candidate for Degrees upon the recommendation of the Registrar [S.96-124]. The list of Candidates approved by the Provost will be appended to the official Minutes of the October 16, 1998, meeting of Senate.
