360 Professional Development
The goal of graduate education is to transform students into scholars and professionals in their disciplines. The programs of the 360 degree graduate student professional development initiative provide critical communication, writing, and professional skills that enable new scholars to disseminate their research, to teach effectively, and collaborate successfully, and provide career preparation that facilitates their successful transition to careers in academia, government, industry and beyond.
The programs complement the disciplinary preparation that students receive in their departments through coursework, research, conference participation and interaction with faculty and peers.
Each stage of graduate education requires unique skills from students. 360 programs are designed to provide graduate students with the knowledge, skills and mentoring they need to succeed at each stage of the graduate journey, from coursework through comprehensive exams, thesis writing and publishing to the academic and non-academic job-search after graduation.
The 360° professional development programs offer support in seven main areas:
The 360° Graduate Student Professional Development Initiative is the result of campus-wide collaboration between the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the Teaching Support Centre, Student Development Services, Western Libraries, the Career Centre, Western Communications, the faculties and many other colleagues across campus.
